The four cases follow the seasons, beginning with fall. Emma Worm believes she is hearing a ghost in the pumpkin next door. Inspector Hopper and McBugg solve this mystery without much trouble, but McBugg, insatiable as always, wonders what a house (pumpkin) tastes like. During the winter both Inspector Hopper and the doctor suffer from severe colds. The ending notes that misery loves company. In the third case, deductive skills are put to the task as a string, paper and strong wind on a March day help the detectives find the answers to the disappearance of Miko, Mrs. Bettle's little daughter. The concluding story involves the cricket and the missing music sheets. The creative solution may bring a smile. Also parents will get the play on words "I present you to my buddy, Holly, and the Crickets!" but young readers will take it at face value since they will probably not know of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. In this appealing follow-up to Inspector Hopper (HarperCollins, 2000), the grasshopper sleuth and his sidekick, McBugg, investigate four mysteries, one for each season. In autumn, the private eyes help Emma Worm find out why strange noises are coming from a pumpkin. In "A Winter Mystery," Inspector Hopper visits the doctor because of a bad cold, only to discover that the physician has disappeared. A string of clues and some windy spring weather play a part in the next chapter, as the detectives uncover the whereabouts of Mrs. Beetle's missing child. In the final installment, Holly Cricket's sheet music has been stolen, and the investigators interview various winged suspects, finally determining that a wasp has used it to patch a hole in his nest. Cushman uses vibrant colors in his playful full- and partial-page cartoons, and the artwork extends the gentle humor of the text. Each story is just the right length for sharing aloud or independent reading. Colorful, larger-than-life critters appear on every page. A great choice for beginning readers, and a fun selection for units on insects.

Cushman offers a second helping of good, just-this-side-of-goofy stories for beginning readers, featuring Inspector Hopper and McBugg, introduced in Inspector Hopper (2000). Hauntings and disappearances figure in this four-story collection, one for each of the seasons. In autumn, suitably enough, a ghost appears to have taken up residence in a pumpkin. In winter the doctor can't be found; in spring a young bug has wandered off; in summer some sheet music has mysteriously gone missing. Cushman drops visual clues to let readers participate in the solutions to the mysteries, sight gags to keep the stories lively, as well as other clues to help them solve any mysteries among the words they are reading. The text is challenging enough, with good pacing and drama: "A cold wind rustled the trees. Dry leaves crackled and crunched. 'It is very spooky here,' said McBugg. 'I wonder if ghosts really do live here.' " Cushman also makes the bug world a pretty appealing place, with its fine colors, merry gesticulations, everyday happenings, and doubtless the only mealy bug in existence that sports luxurious mustachios and a dapper bowler hat. |
