Special delivery! Five mouthwatering titles arrive to satisfy hungry kids. In Pizza! by Jan Pienkowski, "The king is coming for lunch," and his minions prepare a proper pizza feast for the golden-maned monarch with a giant roar. "Caterpillars," "bugs" and "tadpoles" number among the "creepy, crawly... toppings," which appear with the aid of a turning wheel. An assortment of pull tabs, liftable flaps and neon-bright pop-ups bring the kitchen to life.
Children's Literature
One of the reasons Jan Pienkowski's pop-up books are so welcome to publishers and readers alike is the unique way he presents universally familiar events and even emotions푝n this case, panic. Pizza! opens with a clearly frantic bear, all four legs flying outward, announcing that "The king is coming to lunch! What will he eat?" In the remaining pages the bear, an owl, penguin, a mouse and an ostrich hurriedly rustle up a pizza for the impending arrival of a hungry lion. One innovative pop-up shows bear shoving the pizza into the open oven; and without any instructions to do so, the reader is moved to close the black inside of the oven door, which action moves the pizza inside the oven and reveals bear and mouse on the back of the door pushing it closed.
School Library Journal
This eye-popping book features impressive paper engineering. A bear holding his cell phone is planning lunch for the king. An owl reads a cookbook, a happy penguin kneads the pizza dough with his feet, and a mouse and spider pop out of cupboards. Young audiences will enjoy picking tasty toppings from a rotating paper wheel that shows caterpillars, bugs, tadpoles, worms, snails, and-a frog jumps on the pizza. Basic text gives a framework to the brightly painted pictures. Listeners will enjoy making "slurp, nosh, CRUNCH, gulp, gobble, YUM YUM, nibble" and "ROAR" sounds along with the lunching animals. A delicious entr e to serve up for storytimes about food. |
