가난한 집 소녀는 추운 겨울날 꽃과 성냥을 팔기 위해 거리로 나갑니다. 그러나 아무도 소녀에게서 꽃과 성냥을 사주지 않지요. 추위와 허기에 지친 소녀는 차갑고 모진 바람을 피하기 위해 건물 사이의 조그만 구석에 쪼그리고 앉앗어요. 그리고는 성냥을 켭니다. 성냥을 켤 때마다 따뜻한 난로와 풍성한 식탁과 멋진 크리스마스 장식이 나타납니다. 그리고 밤하늘에 흘러가는 별똥별을 봅니다. 이 세상에서 유일하게 소녀를 따뜻하게 대해줬던 할머니는 말씀하셨지요. 별똥별이 떨어지면 누군가 하늘나라로 올라 가는 것이라고... 소녀는 다시 성냥을 켭니다. 성냥불속에서 할머니가 환하게 웃고 계셔요. 할머니와 즐겁게 보냈던 옜날이 너무 생생하게 보입니다. 소녀는 할머니를 좀더 오래 보기 위해서 성냥 한묶음에 모두 불을 붙이지요. 할머니가 소녀를 가슴에 안고 들어올립니다. 소녀의 얼굴에는 환한 미소가 영원히 남아 있습니다...

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

The warm, comforting visions (a sumptuous feast, a twinkling Christmas tree, her late grandmother's loving face) that appear to the girl as she slowly burns through her wares shine bright as day in Pinkney's vividly detailed ink-and-watercolor compositions, as finely wrought as his admirers expect. The girl's cherry-red babushka and the fancy garb of harried passersby offer contrast to the stark gray sidewalks and brick buildings.
