이 책의 저자 Jon Scieszka, Lane Smith (Illustrator)는 콤비를 이뤄 Caldecott 수상작인 "The Stinky Cheese Man..."을 비롯한 훌륭한 그림책을 많이 만들었습니다. 이 책 역시 수많은 수상경력에 빛나는 어린이 그림책의 명작이며, 작가들의 천재성을 엿볼 수 있습니다. 우리 생활과 주위의 사물들을 통해 수학의 기본 개념을 재미있게 보여줍니다.
월요일 수학시간에 선생님이 말씀하신 "우리 주위의 거의 모든 것들을 수학적으로 생각할 수 있다"는 한 마디가 이 책의 주인공의 마음을 사로잡습니다. 평상시에는 무심하게 지나쳤던 모든 일들이 수학문제로 보이기 시작한 것이죠. 아침에 일어나서 학교 버스를 탈 때까지 해야할 일에 걸리는 시간과 남은 시간의 차이, 여러가지 도량 단위의 환산문제, 교실안에 있는 손가락과 귀의 총 갯수, 점심시간에 피자조각을 이용한 분수문제, 간식으로 나온 M&M 초코렛을 이용한 미시시피강의 길이를 맞추는 문제... 모든 것들이 끝없이 수학문제로 변합니다. 과연 주인공은 어떻게 이 끊임없는 수학문제의 늪에서 빠져나올 수 있을까요?

In the story, a girl wakes up one morning to find everything in life arranging itself into a math problem. Throughout the school day, each minor event inspires her to create new sets of math problems, which quickly develop from the merely arithmetical to the moderately puzzling to the truly wacky. Other kids in math-across-the-curriculum classes may sympathize when the teacher asks how to divide Rebecca's 24 cupcakes among 25 people: "I'm the first to figure out the answer. / I raise my hand and tell Mrs. Fibonacci / I'm allergic to cupcakes." She decides that her teacher has put a math curse on her, but in her dreams that night, she finds a way out of her mathematical mindset.
