어느 여름 날 아침 어린 소녀와 그녀의 오빠, 엄마와 아빠 이렇게 네 식구가 해변가에서 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있습니다. 이 가족은 각종 채소와 과일, 꽃과 나무를 파는 농부들의 시장으로 구경을 갑니다. 마치 온 세상은 하나의 커다란 정원과 같습니다. 시장에서 구입한 과일을 먹으며 나무 위에서 오후를 맞이합니다. 호수가 누각에서 한가한 오후를 보내다가 갑자기 내리는 소나기에 흠뻑 젖으며 허겁지겁 식당으로 들어갑니다. 맛있는 식사를 하는 동안 비는 그치고 어둠이 내립니다. 지는 해를 뒤로 하고 집으로 돌아가 따뜻한 벽난로에서 몸을 녹입니다. 이웃에 사는 친척들이 악기를 가지고 방문합니다. 피아노, 하프, 바이올린의 연주곡을 들으며 즐거운 저녁 시간을 보내는 동안 달빛과 별빛이 밤하늘을 빛냅니다. 이웃에 사는 모든 사람들은 잠자리에 들기 전 그들만의 시간을 보냅니다. 희망과 평화, 사랑과 신뢰가 넘치는 세상은 우리들 것임을 느끼는 그런 시간을 보내죠.

이 책은 칼데콧 아너상을 비롯해서 수많은 아동도서상을 수상한 작품으로 가로 55cm에 달하는 커다란 그림이 양쪽 페이지 가득 펼쳐지는 아름다운 그림책입니다. 간결한 문장은 운율이 들어 맞는 라임으로 되어 있으며, 그림과 어울리는 손글씨로 인쇄되어 있어서 마치 춤을 추는 듯 합니다.

Other families are also depicted, and readers can follow many of their activities as they overlap and connect with the main characters. The folks in this small, diverse community experience what a summer day has to offer, including sun, wind, storm, and a sense of contentment and well-being. A double-page moon- and starlit illustration shows an overview of all the featured locales highlighted in this small slice of the world. Perfection.
