The Barnes & Noble Review
An eye-popping read about the giant reptiles who once walked the earth!
This educational, entertaining addition to the My Jumbo Books series features an array of dinosaurs with textures to feel, tabs to move, flaps to lift, and more. Each page includes loads of dinosaurs, including the barapasaurus with its turquoise scales to touch, an ornitholestes that lunges from behind bushes when you pull the tab, and a giganotosaurus that pops up with a toothy grin. To add to the learning, a Hall of Dinosaurs spread displays the interior of a museum -- with a wheel that lets you see the hatching of a dinosaur and a pop-up triceratops skeleton -- while the last amazing page leaps to life with a T-rex pop-up and five flaps that test kids to see what reptiles are beneath.
Sure to be dazzled by the interactive fun, early dino lovers will get a great start recognizing eoraptors, feeling spinosaurus spines, and seeing a maiasaura egg! The book's illustrations are friendly and vivid, while the array of dinosaurs gives them a solid foundation for further learning. With this read, they'll be roaring for more dinosaurs in no time! Shana Taylor

Children's Literature
This book is a treasure chest of special effects. There are large dinosaurs that pop up in the center of pages; pull-tabs that cause unexpected results; push-pull tabs that move dinosaurs across pages and up and down; textured and glittering papers that fill cut-out spaces on the pages; and an absolutely delightful purple baby dinosaur that can be pulled up from its egg. Special effects alone; however, are not the only strength of this book. There is a double page spread that simulates a trip to a natural history museum with huge pop-up dinosaur skeletons and a typical moving screen presentation so familiar to museum visitors in large cities. Various dinosaur types are illustrated and identified with their names also spelled out phonically for pronunciation so the reader will be informed as well as entertained and amused. 2004, Cartwheel/Scholastic, Ages 3 to 6.- Eleanor Heldrich |
