"The Adventures Of The Dish And The Spoon으로 Kate Greenaway Medal을 수상한 Mini Grey의 대표작 중 하나입니다. 이 책 역시 Kate Greenaway Medal 후보도서에 오른 명작 그림책입니다. 국내에는 "완두콩 공주"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.
완두콩 공주는 널리 알려진 안데르센의 동화입니다만, 이 책에서는 완두콩을 화자 겸 주인공으로 해서 노총각 왕자가 궁전의 정원사를 아내로 맞이하게 되는 과정을 재미있게 들려줍니다.
왕자가 34세가 되도록 마땅한 신부감을 찾지 못하게 되자, 여왕은 완두콩을 이용해서 신부감을 고르는 엉뚱한 방법을 생각해 냈습니다. 신부가 되기를 원하는 후보자를 20개의 두꺼운 매트리스 위에서 하룻밤을 자게 하고, 그 밑에 넣어놓은 작은 완두콩의 존재를 알아차리는 여성이야 말로 백성을 잘 살필 수 있는 섬세함을 지닌 왕비가 될 거라고 생각했지요. 하지만 그 누구도 20겹의 매트리스 밑에 깔려 있는 완두콩의 존재를 알아챌 수는 없었지요. 모든 후보자들이 완두콩의 존재를 알아차리는데 실패하고, 궁전의 정원사가 하룻밤을 자게 되었을 때, 완두콩은 이 정원사를 도와주기로 합니다. 그리고 매트리스 밖으로 기어 나와서 침대 위로 올라가서는...

The "real story" of the Princess and the Pea is finally told from the pea's point of view. It begins its story in the palace garden, nestled in a pod with its brothers and sisters. It just knew it was destined for greatness and was not surprised when it was picked from the pile of shelled peas and taken to the queen. The prince has just returned home after a year of fruitless searching for a bride and the queen is not happy. She places an ad in the newspaper for REAL princesses and spends months testing young women with the pea-under-the-mattress trick. One stormy night, there is a knock on the door and there stands a young woman with a basket of fresh veggies. Without a chance to say a word, she is whisked off to a bedroom and placed on the top of 20 mattresses. The little pea recognizes her as its beloved gardener and decides to take action. All night long it whispers into her ear, "There is something Large and Round and very Uncomfortable in the bed under you." The rest is history. This story lacks the zing and energy and cohesiveness of other spoofs such as Jon Scieszka's The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs (Viking, 1989). The gardening touches in the quirky illustrations add an element of fun, but even the queen's carrot nose and pea eyes cannot save the rambling tale. Readers are left hoping for more "inside dirt" than is delivered here.
