어느 겨울날, 매트가 집 근처에 있는 산으로 산책을 갔다가 조그만 샘물을 발견합니다. 샘물이 있는 곳을 전에는 웅덩이라고 불렀지만, 주변을 살펴보던 매트는 예전에 그곳에 연못이 있었을지도 모른다고 생각했습니다.
동생 케이티와 친구인 파블로의 도움을 받아 매트는 연못을 복원하기로 합니다. 바닥에 흩어져 있던 잡동사니들과 쓰레기들을 모아서 버리고, 며칠에 걸려 돌과 나무들을 이용해서 샘물이 흘러나가는 길목에 댐을 만들었습니다.
댐에 막힌 물줄기는 서서히 연못을 채우기 시작하고, 봄이 지나갈 즈음 아름다운 연못이 완성되었습니다. 아빠의 도움을 받아, 이제 연못에는 나무로 만든 배도 띄울 수 있었지요.
이제 연못은 많은 생명들의 보금자리가 되었습니다. 익충과 해충 등 다양한 곤충들이 자라고, 곤충들을 잡아먹는 작은 새들이 모여 들었으며, 물고기가 모이고, 물고기를 잡아먹는 큰 새들도 연못에 날아왔습니다.
여름이 지나갈 즈음, 아이들은 아빠와 함께 연못가에서 캠핑을 하며 추억을 쌓았으며,
늦가을에는 언제나 하늘 높이 날아가던 수많은 기러기들이 연못에 내려와서 쉬었습니다.
겨울에는 동네 아이들이 모두 모여서 신나게 스케이트를 탔습니다.
기나긴 겨울이 지나고 다시 봄이 오자, 아이들은 연못가에서 조용히 동물들을 관찰을 했습니다. 이제 연못은 사슴, 오리, 기러기, 따오기 등 수많은 야생동물들의 휴식처이자 삶의 터전이 되었습니다...
