남아프리카의 가난한 마을에서 어린 아이들이 아침부터 설레는 마음으로 아빠들을 기다립니다. 아빠들은 10개월간 머나먼 광산에서 돈을 벌기 위해 집을 떠났다가 오늘 돌아옵니다. 학교에서 돌아온 아이들은 동네 어귀 밖으로 길이 시작되는 곳에 모여서 멀리 아빠 모습이 보이기를 기다립니다. 어이들은 지루함을 달래기 위해 노래를 부르고, 마을 사람들도 하나 둘 모이기 시작하더니 함께 춤추고 노래 부르며 아빠들이 돌아오기를 기다립니다. 하지만 해가 지고 어둠이 내려도 아빠들의 모습은 보이지를 않네요. 마을 사람들은 모두 집으로 돌아 갔지만 6명의 아이들은 자리를 뜨지 않고 계속 기다립니다. 따뜻한 밤바람이 불어오고, 엄마는 밤참을 가져 왔습니다. 트럭이 나타나고 사람들이 트럭에서 내렸습니다만, 아빠는 아니네요. 가장 어린 졸라니는 잠이 들고, 나머지 아이들은 졸음을 쫓기 위해 서로 이야기를 주고 받습니다. 어느덧 밤이 지나가고 여명이 밝아오기 시작할 무렵, 멀리서 트럭의 헤드라이트가 보이기 시작하자, 아이들은 모두 자리에서 벌떡 일어납니다. 트럭에는 아이들이 기다리고 기다리던 아빠들이 타고 있었습니다. 아빠에게 달려간 아이들은 신이 나서 큰 소리로 노래를 부릅니다. The perspective of this universal anticipation is expanded in this lively portrayal of young children in a South African village eagerly awaiting their fathers' homecoming after ten months of working in the mines. The celebration begins early in the morning, builds throughout the day, and is subdued but sustained until the following dawn when the men finally arrive at the village crossroads. The lifestyle and the setting are observed honestly and sensitively, without romanticism or sensationalism, as adults go about their daily routines and children fashion homemade musical instruments from salvaged scraps. The rhythm and repetition of the simple text evoke the jubilation and expectant mood of the children and reinforce their enthusiasm. Set against finely detailed depictions of village structures and striking landscapes, the expressive, impressionistic portraits of children and adults are best viewed at a distance, but blend beautifully in the perfectly composed watercolor illustrations.
