What is 칼데콧상? Caldecott상은 해마다 미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서 그 해의 가장 뛰어난 어린이 그림책에 수여하는 상이며, 한 작품에 Medal상을, 그리고 2~5편의 작품에 Honor상을 수여합니다. 19세기에 활동한 영국의 저명한 Illustrator인 Randolph Caldecott의 업적으로 기리기 위해 1938년에 제정되었으며, 현재는 어린이 그림책 분야의 세계에서 가장 권위있는 상으로 인정받고 있습니다.

칼데콧상을 받은 현존하는 가장 위대한 그림책 작가 중 한 명인 레인 스미스의 최신작입니다. 이 책은 영국에서 한 해 가장 우수한 그림책에 수여하는 케이트 그린어웨이상을 수상했습니다. 국내에서는 "친구가 있어, 앞으로 앞으로"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.

아이들은 자신을 둘러싼 세상이 늘 낯설고 새롭습니다. 모르는 것에 대한 두려움이 앞서기도 하지만 궁금증과 호기심이 더 강해서 모험을 하기도 합니다. 이처럼 두려움과 호기심을 모두 품은 아이가 이 책의 주인공입니다. 그림책의 첫 장을 넘기면 숲 속에 그 아이가 산양 무리와 어울려 있습니다. 머리에 나뭇가지 뿔을 단 아이는 얼핏 산양과 닮아 보이지만, 분명 산양과는 다른 특징을 가지고 있지요. 외양뿐만 아니라 가지고 있는 능력도 다른 것 같아 보입니다. 가령 산양이 쉬이 오르는 암벽을 아이는 오를 수 없다거나 하는 차이점을 보이지요. 산양 무리가 훌쩍 암벽을 올라 간 뒤, 아이는 그들을 따라 오를 수 없다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 그러나 아이는 좌절하지 않고 이내 한 발 두 발 길을 걷기 시작합니다. 아이가 길을 떠나면서 이 이야기는 무수한 감정을 일으키는 환상적 모험 세계로 독자를 인도합니다.

Smith's vibrant sponge-paint illustrations and use of unusual collective nouns such as smack and unkindness bring the book to life. Arrayed in pixielike footwear and a leafy tunic, his protagonist is constantly moving - falling mid-flight from an "unkindness of ravens" or transforming into a trapezoid to mimic the "formation of rocks." The interactions are, by turn, affectionate, dramatic, and funny - developed through expert shifts in expression, gesture, and posture. Witness the water swelling and lifting the lad's clothing, revealing matching underwear as he cavorts with the "smack of jellyfish" or the stare down from the "band of gorillas" when he plays a sour note. The artist has honed his technique of manual and digital manipulation of oil paint, sprayed varnish, and colored pencils to create a visual extravaganza of dappled, textured compositions; their changing palettes create colors ranging from the dazzling whiteness behind a "colony of penguins" to the restful blues enveloping the nocturnal "bed of clams." A shift from past to present tense upon the return home, plus the second use (new meaning) of "a tribe of kids," contrasts a raucous, Pan-like forest civilization with the quiet goats that opened the story. VERDICT There is much to savor and explore in this cleverly crafted picture book, and readers will glean more with each perusal. A must-have.
