이 책은 Part 1 작곡가와 Part 2 악기로 구성되어 있으며,
Part 1 작곡가편에서는 바로크시대, 고전파시대, 로맨틱시대, 현대시대로 구분해서 비발디, 바하, 하이든, 모짜르트, 베토벤, 바그너, 차이코프스키, 브람스, 말러, 드뷔시, 스트라빈스키, 쉔버그, 거쉬윈, 코프랜드, 번슈타인 등 총 15명의 대표적인 작곡가들의 생애와 업적, 그리고 일화들을 소개합니다. CD에는 이들의 작품 중 가장 널리 알려진 12곡을 맛보기 식으로 들려줍니다.
Part 2 악기편에서는 오케스트라를 구성하는 악기들을 현악기, 목관악기, 금관악기, 타악기 및 건반악기로 구분해서 총 29종의 악기들에 대해서 자세한 사진과 함께 자세히 소개합니다. CD에는 각 악기별 특성을 잘 나타내는 연주곡 25곡이 수록되어 있습니다.
그외에도 오케스트라에서 악기들의 배치, 지휘자와 지휘방법 등도 함께 수록하고 있습니다.
CD는 총 37곡이 수록되어 있으며, 전체 녹음시간은 총 1시간 분 분량입니다. 비발디의 사계 중 봄, 모짜르트의 아이네 클라이네 나흐트무직, 베토벤의 5번 운명교향곡과 9번 합창교향곡, 브람스의 헝가리안 무곡, 드뷔시의 아라베스크를 비롯해서 윌리엄텍 서곡, 볼레로, 카르멘 조곡, 호두까기인형 조곡, 그리고 하이든의 유명한 Concerto for Trumpet in E Flat에 이르기까지 주옥같은 클래식의 명곡들이 녹음되어 있습니다.

Orchestra Bob guides readers through a delightful musical journey. The book is divided into two major parts: composers from Vivaldi to Bernstein and their associated musical periods, and the instruments of the orchestra. There are interesting and sometimes humorous bits of information about the men, their music, and corresponding historical events. The last two pages introduce the conductor. Quotations, boxed definitions, and the captions that accompany the colorful photos and spot cartoon drawings enhance the instructive text. In some places, however, the drawings are in stark contrast to the photos and take away from the overall appearance of a page. An accompanying CD provides musical selections for readers to listen to at specific places in the text. These selections are short enough to keep young listeners' attention. Although some well-known figures, such as Handel, Schubert, and Strauss, are missing, this is a fun way to travel through the world of music. |
