아기곰 바르톨로뮤("Ba")가 자러 갈 시간이에요. 아빠곰 조지가 양치질을 하고 가서 자라고 하지만 바르톨로뮤는 "Nah"라는 말만 되풀이하고 울기 시작해요. 아직 바르톨로뮤는 할 수 있는 말은 "Nah"밖에 없어요. 잠자기가 싫은가 보군요. 침대에 데리고 갔지만 침대 아래에 누워있네요. 조지가 "침대로 가!(Go To Bed!)"라고 큰 소리로 이야기하고 바르톨로뮤가 누워있는 침대로 와서 달래기 시작합니다. 끌어안고 달랩니다. 그리고는 잘 자라고 이야기하자 바르톨로뮤는 부드럽게 "Nah"라고 속삭이네요. 바르톨로뮤는 크게 하품하고 눈을 감습니다. 그리고는 잠이 들었습니다.
Virginia Miller의 부드럽고 유머러스한 그림은 어린이의 눈높이에 맞추었기 때문에 어린 독자들이 부담없이 볼 수 있는 책입니다.

Reviewed with Virginia Miller's On Your Potty! Ages 9 mo.-3 yr. Originally published in 1994, these volumes work better in their new, board-book format. Toddlers will easily identify with little bear, Ba (whose favorite word is "Nah!"), and big bear, George, who sometimes has to use his big voice to get Ba to pay attention. In Bed! Ba is not in the mood for sleep, but when George insists, "Go to bed!" Ba complies. Well, there has to be a bit of tickling and giggling first. In Potty! Ba insists he doesn't have to go, even after George says, "On your potty." But while playing outside, Ba gets the urge, and then experiences the big-boy feeling of using the potty--just in time. Miller's art is simple, expressive, and just the right size for young eyes.

In the two bears' third appearance, George is trying to put little Bartholomew to bed, only to get a determined ``Nah!'' (``Ba's'' only word here) to each suggestion, query, or command. Even after George's ``big voice'' elicits compliance, Ba giggles and wriggles before he finally hugs and snuggles and falls asleep, breathing a last, soft ``Nah.'' Though limned in rougher, more schematic lines than Firth's, these bears are close cousins to Waddell's (Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?, 1992), reenacting with precision and charm another variation of the classic ritual. The simple, totally authentic dialogue and cozily expressive art are just right for two-year-olds like Ba. (Picture book. 1-3) |
