아빠 곰이 아기 곰에게 고양이 새끼를 선물로 주면서 신신당부를 했어요. "고양이가 아직 어리므로 조심스럽게 다뤄야 한다." 하지만 아기 곰은 고양이를 꽉 껴안고, 그네와 수레를 태워서 고양이가 겁을 먹게 했으며, "쿵쿵" 북을 쳐서 고양이를 놀라게 했어요. 고양이는 어디론가 도망을 갔어요. 아빠 곰과 아기 곰은 고양이를 찾아 보았지만 발견할 수가 없었어요. 아기 곰은 울면서 침대 밑으로 들어 갔지요. 그런데 거기에 고양이가 숨어 있었어요. 아기 곰은 고양이를 무릎에 앉히고 쓰다듬어 주면서 앞으로는 고양이를 괴롭히지 않겠다고 다짐했어요.
어린 아이들은 자기 중심적이 될 수 밖에 없지만, 상대방의 입장을 배려 안하고 고양이와 재미있게 놀 생각만 하는 아기곰이 나중에 잘못을 깨닫게 되는 과정을 통해 어린 독자들이 남에 대한 배려의 중요성을 배울 수 있습니다.
