Book Description
With Marilyn Hefner's new full color illustrations, bacteria and viruses have never looked so good! As packed with wit and good humor as with charts and diagrams, this book is still the best explanation of how your body fights germs.
Children's Literature
An easy to understand explanation of what germs are and how some of them make us sick. The explanation of how easy it is to transmit germs through sneezing, shared straws, and open cuts and scrapes may open some young eyes. The various symptoms of diseases and how the body fights them are easy to understand, as are the eight rules for good health. A Reading Rainbow Book.
School Library Journal
This easy-to-read revision of a 1985 title effectively describes the differences between bacteria and viruses and gives other related germy facts. The science is related in simple language and the author uses specific examples that youngsters will readily understand. He explains how germs sometimes "slip in" the body despite defense mechanisms such as skin, nose, and throat. "Your friend has a cold. She sneezes. Germs fly out. You breathe the air. Some of her germs may get into your lungs." Hafner's pen-and-ink and watercolor artwork is attractive and informative, reinforcing the concepts introduced in the text. An interesting addition for libraries not having the previous edition.
The New York Times Book Review
The author does an excellent job of explaining . . . {the} ways that germs get into the body, but that illness is caused by what the germs do once they are inside. The explanations of bacteria and viruses are especially well done. . . . For those who have tried to explain why you should wash your hands before eating, why you should not drink out of someone else's glass, or why you have to stay in bed when you are ill, 'Germs Make Me Sick!' is a splendid aide. |
