Children's Literature
Forty flaps and a child-like text make this book interesting to a young child. The book is actually a series of questions and answers from Katy Cat. The attractive illustrations are executed in gouache, a way of painting with opaque colors mixed with a preparation of gum. While, this book does not reinforce left to right progression, a concept necessary to beginning readers, it is fun. (The questions are on the right and the answers on the left.)
School Library Journal
Cousins's trademark illustrations-colorful, blobby gouache figures surrounded by thick black lines-offer readers a droll treat. Katy Cat participates in a sometimes logical, sometimes fanciful guessing game with her puffin friend, Beaky Boo. On the left page a large picture shows Katy stating, "I have whiskers." On the facing page, she asks, "What do you have, Beaky Boo?" Below, five flaps of various colors and sizes depict ears, a beak, horns, fins, and a trunk. Under each flap, an animal that has the specific feature appears, and children can try to discover the location of Beaky Boo. Readers find out more about the bird through questions that deal with color, texture, animal noises, food of choice, and clothing. The purpose of this book, however, is not animal identification, but pure fun. Along the way, young listeners will also begin thinking about comparisons and enjoy the cheerful, bright colors and, of course, lifting the flaps even after they know what's underneath. Flaps are considered flimsy in library books; but these are sturdy ones, made of light cardboard, with hinges usually more than an inch long. Take a chance; this is a fine book.
