Book Description
Pinkerton's young owner has to identify different birds and mammals for homework. So, she and her mother set off for the woods with Pinkerton and Rose. There they run into a group from the Hunting Academy, out in search of the noble fox. The craziness begins when the hunters mistake Rose for a fox, and charge after her. And where is Pinkerton? He is making friends with a red bird while drifting overhead in a hot air balloon.

A little girl comes home from school after learning about birds and mammals. She has two pets: a dog named Pinkerton and a cat named Rose. For homework, the little girl is supposed to identify ten different birds and mammals. The girl and her mother take Pinkerton and Rose into the woods to find these animals. A group of hunters are also going into the woods on this day. They travel into the woods in a hot air balloon to learn from their teacher, Dr. Kibble, how to hunt foxes. The hunters create lots of excitement for the little girl, her mother, and her pets, which almost causes her not to finish her schoolwork. The family decides to take a break for their picnic, and a wonderful surprise awaits them. Steven Kellogg brings the story to life with his wonderful text and his brilliant illustrations. The pictures are very elaborate. Through his extensive work in color, he makes the illustrations seem almost real.
