The rhyming text depicts why nameless children love school. It is written in the first person, but I have never encountered a child who speaks in verse. All of the reasons, such as "I can hardly wait for lunch!" and " I love to build great big block walls," are certainly valid. However, the text is bland. A storyline is never developed. The rhyme merely describes a typical school day. For a much better example of a book about loving school is Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes. Halpern's simple, vivid illustrations should appeal to young children. Some interesting facts, along with chalk drawings, make up the end papers. They are the most engaging part of the book.

PreS-K-From the bus ride through a typical kindergarten day, Sturges's simple and serviceable rhymes describe the world children will discover when they begin school. Classroom activities include playtime, art, writing numbers and letters, recess, lunch, and storyhour. The book culminates with the highlight, "And what I like the most-/You guessed-/Is our teacher-/She's the best!" Halpern's diverse and appealing students are simply rendered in bright and clear colors. A soothing, bright-as-noon introduction to school that ought to help chase away any shim-shams that first-timers might be experiencing. From the start, Sturges delivers an upbeat note: "School, school, school, / I love school!" and keeps it going strong throughout the simple, rhymed text: "With all my friends I laugh and sing. / I talk about most everything." Halpern's artwork is as simple and primary as the verse, with kids going through their day of drawing and the alphabet, lunch, and recess. They celebrate their teacher and their good fortune at having such a neat place to go each day. Some readers will complain that this is a classic piece of avoidance, but its sunny disposition can't help making school look fun. (Picture book. 3-5) |
