생일날에 엄마와 아빠는 금붕어 한 마리를 선물로 주셨습니다. 금붕어의 이름은 노먼입니다. 내가 원한 애완동물은 강아지나 고양이던지, 적어도 털이 복슬복슬한 동물이었지 노먼은 아니었습니다. 노먼이 할 줄 아는 것이라고는 하루종일 어항 속에서 돌고, 돌고, 돌고, 또 도는 일 뿐이었지요. 나는 노먼을 친구들이 갖고 있는 다른 동물들과 바꿔야 겠다고 생각했습니다. 그러기 위해서 Show-and-Tell 시간에 노먼을 멋지게 소개해야겠다고 마음 먹었습니다. 다른 친구들이 자신의 애완동물들을 소개한 후, 마침내 내가 교단에 올라가서노먼을 소개할려고 할 때, 갑자기 에밀리가 가져온 뱀이 사라졌다고 소리를 지르네요. 겁을 먹은 선생님과 친구들이 모두 도망을 가버려서, 오직 노먼 만이 두 눈을 껌뻑이며 내 발표를 들어 주네요. 음악 시간에 튜바를 붐붐바바~ 보비보바~ 불자 어항 속에 있는 노먼이 마치 내 연주를 듣고 있는 듯이 박자에 맞춰서 공기방울을 뽀글보글뽀글 내뿜었습니다. 나는 웬지 모르게 노먼에게 친근감을 느껴졌습니다. 밤 중에 잠자리에 들었을 때 창문에서 지익직 긁는 듯한 소리가 들렸습니다. 너무 무서워서 잔뜩 움추리고 있을 때 눈에 들어 온 것은 방 한쪽 구석에서 나를 향해 미소짓고 있는 듯이 보이는 노먼이었습니다. 나는 노먼이 언제나 내 옆을 지키고 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그리고 지금은 노먼이 다른 애완동물 보다도 더 소중하다고 생각합니다...
한 소년이 처음에는 원치 않았던 금붕어와 점차 친해지고, 소중하게 여기는 과정을 유머러스한 글과 그림으로 재미있게 보여줍니다.

But when he tries to trade Norman for a "good pet," things don’t go as he planned. Could it be that Norman is a better pet than he thought? With wry humor and lighthearted affection, author Kelly Bennett and illustrator Noah Z. Jones tell an unexpected - and positively fishy - tale about finding the good in something you didn’t know you wanted.

Our young narrator is not pleased with his birthday gift. Norman the goldfish is not the kind of pet he wanted. He cannot run, catch, chase strings, or sleep in his bed with him. All Norman does is swim around, and around. So our hero hopes to trade him away, perhaps at Show and Tell, or take him back to the pet store. But somehow a bond begins to grow between him and Norman. By the time they get to the pet store, there is not one other pet that he would trade for Norman. Jones brings a contemporary feeling to this old-fashioned story by creating the visuals digitally. There is a stencil-like but still light-hearted quality of passivity in the appealingly-designed spreads. Large flat color areas still supply contextual details of some middle-class suburb and adequately convey Norman's owner's changing emotions.

A little boy is sorely disappointed when he receives a goldfish for his birthday. "I wanted a pet who could run and catch. Or one who could climb trees and chase strings. A soft, furry pet to sleep on my bed at night. Not Norman." However, as Norman performs acrobatics and makes the child laugh, listens attentively during his show-and-tell presentation when the rest of the class does not, sings along during band practice, and comforts him when he is awakened by a scary noise at night, the boy comes to love and appreciate the pet he at first disdained. The story is told in simple, straightforward language, and the clear lines and vibrant colors of the digital graphics are reminiscent of Taro Gomi's work. This is a sweet story that could be used as a springboard to discussion of the pitfalls of making snap judgments about pets-or people.

In Bennett's story, a little boy (African-American) gets a goldfish as a present. Not a dog or a cat, not a pet that can curl up on his bed at night, for goodness sake-a goldfish. He thinks maybe he will trade the fish for something more pet-like; maybe he could do a trade-in. But events conspire to keep Norman the goldfish in the boy's possession. Slowly, grudgingly, the boy starts appreciating Norman's qualities: He's a good listener, he likes the boy's tuba-playing and though he'll never curl up on the boy's bed, he's there to console in the deep of the night. Maybe-no, certainly-the boy will keep Norman, whose virtue just took a little time to surface. Jones's bold art-great cutouts of refined color and characters that might have stepped out of the Hey Arnold Nickelodeon cartoon show-give the rather bald text the warmth to teach that appearances are rarely the whole truth. |
