2001년 Caldecott상을 받은 Olivia의 후속편입니다. 욕심많고 주변사람들을 피곤하게 만들지만 미워할 수 없는 사랑스런 올리비아의 무한 도전... 이번에는 멋진 1인 악대를 꿈꾸네요.
작가 Ian Falconer는 "The New Yorker magazine"의 표지 Illustration을 여러차례 했으며, 뉴욕시립발레단, 샌프란시스코 오페라, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden 등 유명한 오페라 및 발레의 의상 및 무대디자인을 담당한 거장입니다.
올리비아네 가족은 저녁 7시에 시작되는 불꽃놀이를 보러 갈 예정입니다. 하지만 올리비아는 음악을 연주하는 밴드가 없는 불꽃놀이는 앙꼬없는 진빵으로 생각하나 봅니다. 신나는 고적대의 연주와 불꽃놀이는 아이들에게는 환상적인 조합이겠지만, 불행히도 요즘에는 아무런 밴드의 연주없이 불꽃놀이만 하나봅니다.
올리비아는 동생들의 장난감인 실로폰과 북, 아빠의 멜빵, 냄비뚜껑, 호루라기, 장식용 종 등을 이용해서 혼자서 북치고 장구치는 One-Man Band를 만듭니다. 하지만 막상 불꽃놀이를 보러 갈 때는...
이 책에서는 검은색과 회색의 그림들 위에 빨간색과 하늘색이 그림에 포인트를 주며, 불꽃 놀이 장면에서는 노란색이 더해집니다만, 어는 그림책 못지 않게 컬러풀한 느낌을 갖게 합니다. 책을 읽다보면 올리비아의 말과 행동에 공감을 하면서, 낄낄 웃고 있는 자신을 발견하게 됩니다.
읽을 수록 새록새록 재미가 있으며 독창적인 그림책입니다.

The latest escapades of a precocious piglet and the mother who attempts to both nurture and civilize her opens on the morning of a fireworks display. The charcoal-and-gouache scenes with their signature red highlights on uncluttered white backgrounds depict Olivia's family, but readers are soon treated to a series of surprises that include the introduction of a new color (turquoise), collage elements, a fold-out, and full bleeds. When the protagonist declares that a band is essential for the evening's entertainment and that, lacking one, she'll fill in, her mother's thought bubble fills with a photograph of a leaping rock band; Olivia's depicts the marching variety. The fold-out starts with the heroine as the sole majorette and reveals a full-size band of Olivias, with the score of a Sousa-like march printed boldly above. Falconer builds to a crescendo of two and a half pages that portray a picnic at sunset followed by a dazzling display of feathery fireworks. These compositions are predominantly charcoal; the family members, backs to readers, are outlined in the reflected yellow glow of an ascending rocket. The palette returns to the original color scheme in the denouement, a bedtime moment to which all ages will relate. With perfectly nuanced dialogue and a mixture of comical and artful scenes, Falconer explores the logic, invention, and humor emanating from a talented youngster, serious about the mission of the moment.
Booklist
The irrepressible Olivia the pig returns for a fourth adventure. Shocked to discover there will be no band at that evening's fireworks display, Olivia decides to form a band herself--and if you think one piglet can't be a whole band, you obviously don't know this porcine powerhouse. Unfortunately, Falconer seems as easily distracted as his heroine this time around, and his extremely episodic story is little more than a series of setups for visual jokes. Though what result is essentially creative coasting, most children won't care, as Olivia remains an indisputably great character, and Falconer a master of antic line and situation. Devotees of previous books will also be pleased to see that to his usual palette of charcoals and reds Falconer has added a particularly winning shade of blue, and that he has incorporated photographs into many of his droll drawings. 참 다재다능한 사람이라는 생각이 들면서, 부럽네요~ ^^
올리비아는 ebs 방송을 통해 먼저 알게 됐는데,
아이보다 제가 더 재밌게 보고 있을 때가 많습니다.
이런 이유로 Olivia Forms a Band 도 샀지요.
책도 엄청 재미있네요. ^^
첫 페이지부터 다 똑같아 보이는 빨간 양말인데 짝이 없다고 하질않나,
fireworks에 악단이 꼭 있어야 한다고, 여럿이 하는 악단을 혼자서 할 수 없다고 하자
"This morning you told me I sounded like five people!"말하네요.
그렇게 온종일 필요한 것들을 만들더니, 정작 갈 때는 make-up 만 하네요.
빨간색 입술만 온통 보이는 좀 우낀 화장이긴 했지만...ㅋ
해가 지려고 하는 하늘, 붉은 노을과 불꽃 놀이 하는 하늘이 환상적으로 표현되어 있답니다.

 EBS 만화에도 나오죠..올리비아.. |
EBS 만화를 보고 아이가 좋아하지 않았다면 안샀을것 같아요..
가격도 하프에 나오는 것중에서도 비싼 편이고...
내용이 유아용이라기보다는 좀 더 어린이용 스럽고 위트가 있고 아이의 심리를 재미있게 잘 표..

아직 어려서 올리비아가 나온다는 것만으로도 이 책은 사랑받고 있지만
좀 더 자라면 내용을 더 공감하고 보지 않을까 기대해보게 됩니다.
한글어판도 있다는데 늘 그렇듯이 영문이 더 좋네요..^^

모두 같아 보이는 빨간 양말 속에서도 올리비아는 특별한 양말을 찾습니다..
그리고 나선 밴드를 만들기로하지요..

올리비아 시리즈 중에서도 어려운 단어가 거의 없는 편이네요..
