Duck Soup, Duck at the Door, Sitting Duck 등 베스트셀러 그림책인 Duck시리즈의 저자인 Jackie Urbanovic의 재미있는 그림책입니다.
시골 농장에 어둠이 내리자, 크고 빨간 헛간에 사는 양은 곰돌이 인형을 껴안고 잠이 듭니다.
그런데 갑자기 들리는 오리의 울음소리 "Quack!"... 놀라서 잠이 든 양은 헛간 문밖에서 울고 있는 오리를 데리고 들어와서는 자기 옆에 누이고 같이 잠이 듭니다.
그런데 이번에는 "BAAA" 염소가 헛간 문 밖에 와서 큰 소리로 웁니다. 염소를 데리고 들어와서 다시 잠이 들려고 하니 이번에는 돼지가 와서는 "OINK", 그 다음에는 소가 와서 "MOO", 그 다음에는 말이 와서 "NEIGH"... 밤새도록 차례로 문밖에 와서 우는 동물들을 헛간에 데리고 들어와서 재우느라 잠을 자지 못한 불쌍한 양...
그러다 보니 어느덧 환하게 동이 터옵니다. 그때 또 다시 들리는 우렁찬 수탉의 울음소리 "Cook-a-Doodle-Doo" 이 소리를 듣고 잠을 자던 모든 동물들이 잠에서 깨어나 새로운 하루를 시작하기 위해 헛간 밖으로 나왔지만, 밤새도록 잠을 설쳤던 양은 곰돌이 인형으로 눈을 가리고 계속 깊은 잠에 빠져 있네요...
운율이 들어맞는 라임으로 된 문장들이 계속 반복해서 나오기 때문에 어린 아이들이 큰 소리로 읽으면 재미있고 신이 납니다. 동물들의 울음소리 의성어를 영어로 표현하는 법을 배울 수 있으며, 창밖으로 보여주는 실루엣을 보고 다음에 등장할 동물들을 맞추는 Guessing Game을 해도 재미있습니다.

In this entertaining bedtime story, Sheep tucks into the "big red barn on the farm" for a peaceful night's rest, but it is continually interrupted by a parade of animals making noises. "Then there came a loud QUACK/at the door, at the door,/and the sheep couldn't sleep any more./'Go to sleep!' said the sheep/to the duck at the door./'And please don't QUACK any more!'" Sheep invites Duck into his barn and they both fall fast asleep. This playful scenario repeats word for word, except for the new animal and its sound as Sheep is joined in a cozy, dozing pile by Goat, Pig, Cow, and Horse, until Rooster wakes the farm up for a new day. Beaumont's lyrical text bounces along a predictable path, making for a terrific read-aloud that will have listeners quacking, mooing, and neighing with Sheep's friends each time they wake him up. But it's Urbanovic's vibrant, humorous watercolors that move this story forward right from the copyright page as Sheep gets ready for bed to his growing frustration as fatigue makes him frantic. The animal sounds are inserted into the text in colorful, thick letters that grow larger with each loud utterance until Rooster's "COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO" screams and stretches off a spread, making it surprising that Sheep gets any sleep at all. This is sure to be a storytime favorite alongside Audrey Woods's The Napping House (Harcourt, 1984).

Poor sheep just wants to sleep. Yawning big yawns, his bedtime ritual begins on the copyright page as he brushes his teeth, grabs his teddy and heads out to the big red barn. But just as he closes his eyes, "There came a loud QUACK / at the door, at the door, / and the sheep couldn't sleep any more." Duck is making a racket! Sheep ushers duck inside and admonishes him with a stern, "Shhh! Not a peep! Go to sleep!" and the two snuggle in for the night. But then... "There came a loud OINK / at the door, at the door, and the / sheep couldn't sleep any more." One after another, a parade of farm animals interrupts sheep's slumber. As each animal boisterously crashes through the barn door, the bedraggled sheep, with wool askew and hoof to head, becomes more and more miserable. Beaumont's playful, repetitive text, with its loud animal sounds, will have children chanting along to the beat. In more intimate sharings, readers with a careful eye can spot the shadow of the next animal, along with a certain tiny, feathered friend who just may make the loudest sound of all.
The Horn Book
Together, Urbanovics comical watercolor illustrations and Beaumonts repetitive rhyming text manage to be both lively and soothingthe perfect combination to help energetic little ones blow off steam and settle down at bedtime. |
