국내에서도 번역서가 출간된 Not a Box(이건 상자가 아니야), Not a Stick(이건 막대가 아니야), A Penguin Story(펭귄 이야기), Kindergarten Diary(안녕? 유치원) 등 다수의 베스트셀러 그림책 작가인 앙트아네트 포티스의 최신작입니다.

개는 멍멍, 고양이는 야옹, 새는 짹짹... 동물들의 울음소리는 예나 지금이나 항상 같지요. 새 들도 까마귀는 깍깍, 비둘기는 구구, 홍관조는 칩칩... 언제나 같은 소리를 냅니다.

하지만 어느날 조그만 갈색새가 항상 똑같은 소리를 내야하는데 실증이 나서 "짹짹" 소리 대신에 "프루들, 스프루들"이라는 소리를 냈습니다. 까마귀는 갈색새가 이런 엉뚱한 소리를 내는 것이 마음에 들지 않았습니다. 까마귀는 갈색새를 윽박질러서 다시 "짹짹" 소리를 내도록 했지요.

하지만 6분도 지나지 않아서 갈색새는 마음 속에서 끓어 오른 변화에 대한 욕구를 참지 못하고 "짹짹" 대신에 "티플 비플 미플"... 아예 한 술 더 뜨는 소리로 노래를 불렀습니다. 까마귀는 "그만해!"라고 소리를 질렀지만, 갈색새의 새로운 시도를 재미있다고 생각한 다른 새들도 갈색새를 따라하기 시작합니다. 홍관조는 "이클 지클 피클 트리클", 비둘기는 "우블리 스누블리"...

모든 새들이 자기 말을 듣지 않자, 실망한 까마귀는 무리를 떠나 멀리 날아가 버렸습니다. 하지만 까마귀도 마음 속으로는 새로운 소리로 노래를 부르고 싶었지요. 다른 새들이 멀리서 새로운 소리로 계속 노래를 부르자 까마귀는 참지 못하고 이들에게 다가와서 "까악 까악" 대신에 "우우피"라는 소리를 내며 노래를 불렀습니다.

이제 모든 새들이 새로운 소리로 노래를 부르자, 밑에서 이 모습을 바라보던 개와 고양이도...

All of the birds say, "caw," "coo," "chip," or "peep," except Little Brown Bird, who wants to try something different. She finds it more enjoyable to say things like, "Froodle sproodle" and "Tiffle biffle,/just a little/miffle!" Crow is annoyed, especially when the other birds join in, but who could resist participating in fun like this? Portis's fun story is filled with humor and silly rhyming words that both children and adults will appreciate. The detailed illustrations, done in a glowing palette of pencil, charcoal, and ink, are featured on multiple spreads throughout the book. Although the narrative text is small and gets lost in a sea of grass or bushes at times, the birds' speech balloons are bold and provide a great opportunity for children to practice sounding out words (even if they are made up). The cadence of the birds' dialogue might take a few read-throughs to get used to, but that will only provide more laughs in the meantime. This book will work in many settings and is certain to prompt giggles from young audiences.

A little brown bird is sick of peeping like she’s supposed to and lets out an unexpected “Froodle.” Her other bird friends are shocked, but soon Cardinal is spouting “Ickle zickle” instead of “Chirp,” and Dove sings “Oobly snoobly” instead of “Coo.” Crow, who is not silly, tries to keep the other birds in line, but they’re having too much fun to listen, and Crow flies off since “there is no such thing as a silly black crow!” Silliness is contagious, though, and Crow can’t stay away for long. Portis (Not a Box, 2007) places the simply drawn birds with thick outlines on soft, pleasing background scenes in muted tones. Her dynamic variety of perspectives adds drama and humor, such as when Crow looms large over the little brown bird in a close-up spread or when Crow hops ever closer as the birds can be seen from afar perched on a moonlit hedgerow. The big, bold speech balloons filled with irresistible nonsense words make this a great choice for shared read-alouds.
