나타샤는 아주 버릇없는 아이는 아니었지만 좀처럼 기다리는 법이 없는 떼쟁이입니다. 할머니를 졸졸 따라다니며, 바쁜 할머니에게 그네를 밀어 달라고 하고, 지금 염소 수레 타고 싶다며 투정을 부리기도 합니다. 또 염소 먹이를 주러 간 할머니에게 자기부터 먼저 먹을 것을 달라고 보챕니다.

겨우 일을 마친 할머니와 점심을 먹으러 집 안으로 들어온 나타샤는 선반 위에서 못 보던 작은 인형을 하나 발견합니다. 할머니가 나타샤만 했을 때 딱 한 번 가지고 논 인형이라네요. 나타샤가 가지고 놀고 싶어 하자, 할머니는 ‘지금이 딱 좋은 때’라며 인형을 건네고 가게에 나갔습니다. 그런데 할머니가 사라지자마자 이상한 일이 일어났습니다. 바로 인형이 살아 움직이며 나타샤에게 밖에 나가 놀자고 한 것!

인형은 뭐든지 빨리 당장해 달라고 떼를 쓰며, 나타샤는 지치든 말든 자기가 좋아하는 것을 계속 해 달라고 조르네요. 나타샤가 떼장이라면 인형은 그야말로 슈퍼떼장이! 인형을 통해 나타샤는 자기가 할머니한테 했던 행동을 고스란히 반대 입장에서 겪게 된 셈입니다.

결국 나타샤는 몸 고생, 마음고생을 하면서 깨닫게 됩니다. 그동안 자기 때문에 할머니나 다른 사람이 얼마나 힘들었는지를... 나타샤는 처음으로 다른 사람의 입장이 되어 보는 특별한 경험을 통해 자신이 얼마나 응석받이였는지를 알게 되고 자신의 못된 버릇을 고칠 수 있게 됩니다.

The doll comes to life and subjects Natasha to the same sort of insistent whining that Natasha used on Babushka. The girl learns her lesson and turns out "to be quite nice after all." This pedantic story is made more acceptable by Polacco's beautiful illustrations. Her expressive, Old World figures, bright colors, and charming details of a house and farm in Russia will delight readers, even if predictability makes the story less enticing than the pictures.
