어느 토요일 아침, 바비는 공원에서 커비 선생님과 딱 마주칩니다. 도망가고 싶지만 그랬다가는 더 큰일이 날 것 같습니다. 물론, 이 우연한 만남이 어색한 것은 커비 선생님도 마찬가지입니다.

그런데 커비 선생님은 정말로 몬스터일까요?

한동안 두 사람은 어색해서 어쩔 줄 몰라 합니다. 그때 바람이 불어 커비 선생님의 모자가 날아가고, 바비가 달려가 모자를 찾아오면서 조금씩 마음의 거리를 좁히게 됩니다. 바비는 이 경험을 통해 선생님이 몬스터가 아닐 수도 있다는 것, 학교에서 보여 준 모습이 선생님의 전부가 아니라는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다. 사실 커비 선생님은 할머니한테 선물 받은 모자를 소중하게 간직하고, 공원 연못에 사는 오리들과 놀아주는 다정한 사람이었지요.

바비가 마음을 열면서 커비 선생님의 모습도 점점 달라집니다. 얼룩덜룩하던 연두색 피부는 발그레한 살구색이 되고, 심술궂은 눈과 뾰족한 이빨, 커다란 콧구멍은 상냥한 눈, 코, 입으로 바뀌어 갑니다. 다음 월요일 학교에서 만난 커비 선생님은 여전히 쿵쿵쿵 걷고 쩌렁쩌렁 말합니다. 하지만 그런 선생님을 바라보는 바비의 표정은 예전과는 사뭇 다릅니다.

When Bobby goes to the park to blow off some steam, something terrible happens: he runs into his ghastly teacher. Ms. Kirby isn’t happy to see Bobby, either, but after some awkwardness, they start a friendly-if formal-conversation. When a sudden gust of wind blows Ms. Kirby’s favorite hat away, Bobby’s the one who catches it before it flies into the pond. Soon Ms. Kirby and Bobby are showing each other their favorite places in the park, and all the while, Ms. Kirby looks less like a grumpy monster and more like a friendly young teacher in a big hat.
