국내에도 번역서가 출가된 베스트셀러 그림책인 "The Watermelon Seed(수박씨를 삼켰어!)"와 "Good Night Owl(잘 자, 올빼미야!)"의 저자인 Greg Pizzoli의 또 하나의 대표작입니다.

옛날 옛적에 못된 짓만 골라하는 용이 살았습니다. 꽃밭을 짓밟고, 음식에 침뱉고, 책에 낙서하고, 사람들에게 모래를 뿌리고, 아기 유니콘이 먹고 있는 캔디를 뺏어먹고...

참다 못한 왕은 못된 용을 길들이는 기사에게 큰 상을 주겠다는 공고문을 붙였습니다. 많은 기사들이 용감하게 용을 길들이기 위해 도전했습니다만 모두 실패하고, 용은 이전보다 더욱 나쁜 짓들을 하게 되었습니다.

참다 못한 왕은 이번에는 기사뿐만 아니라 일반인들에게도 용을 길들이면 상을 주겠다는 공고문을 붙였지만, 역시 모든 사람들은 용을 길들이는데 실패했으며, 용은 더욱 더 못된 짓들을 하며 사람들을 괴롭혔습니다.

이런 용의 만행을 지켜보던 어떤 소년이 있었습니다. 그 소년은 용에게 그만하라고 소리치는 대신에 이야기책을 만들었습니다. 다음날, 소년은 마쉬멜로우를 이용해서 용이 소년 근처로 오게 한 다음, 나무 밑에 앉아서 이야기책을 큰 소리로 읽기 시작했습니다. 책의 내용은 용감하고 착한 용이 못된 기사들을 물리치고 위험에 처한 공주를 구하는 이야기였습니다. 소년이 읽어주는 이야기에 흥미를 느낀 용은 소년 주위를 맴돌면서 안 듣는 척 딴청을 피웠습니다. 결국 용은 얌전하게 나무 밑에 앉아서 다른 아이들과 함께 책을 읽게 되었으며, 마침내 소년은 용을 길들이는데 성공했지요.

What is 하드커버? 양장본이라고도 불리우며, 표지가 단단한 판지로 만들어진 책입니다. 판지를 천이나 가죽으로 감싸기도 합니다. 책의 속지는 일반적으로 중성처리된 종이(Acid-free paper)를 사용해서 잘 변질이 되지 않기 때문에 오랫동안 보관하기에 적합합니다. 이 종류의 책은 더스트 재킷, 또는 더스트 커버로 불리는 표지덮개가 함께 있는 경우가 많습니다. 간혹 내부 속지가 콩기름 코팅이 된 경우 고약한 냄새가 나는 책도 있습니다.

We all know dragons are terrible, but this one is especially terrible. He scribbles in books. He steals candy from baby unicorns. He even burps in church. Seriously, who does that? Dragon, that's who. The king, the knights, and the villagers are desperate to take down this beast once and for all. But sometimes it's up to the unlikeliest of heroes to tame a dragon this terrible.

An unruly dragon with a bad attitude stomps on flowers, scribbles in books, and snatches candy away from baby unicorns. The king recruits knights to deal with the problem, but they all fail miserably. In response, the dragon ramps up his nastiness and toilet papers the castle and pops birthday balloons. A clever boy, with superb fairy tale-writing skills, saves the day by luring the dragon with a trail of marshmallows and then captivating him with a story he can't resist. Funny details abound in Pizzoli's cartoon illustrations, from royal posters tagged with "Dragon Was Here" graffiti to the not so scary dragon trying to feign readerly disinterest by shuffling a deck of cards and surreptitiously peeking around a tree. The witty, conversational-style narration interjects timely comments ("HEY, WAIT…What about the reward?"). VERDICT In this laugh-out-loud picture book, the powers of storytelling triumphantly tame the beast.

In naive, flattened cartoons, Pizzoli mixes modern and medieval with aplomb as Dragon TP’s a castle and spray paints “Dragon was here” on a wall underneath a posted notice from the king promising a reward to whomever stops Dragon. These pictures, combined with DiPucchio’s clearly disapproving narrator make Dragon’s transgressions all the funnier.
