새하얀 눈과 까만 검댕밖에 보이지 않는 작고 추운 마을에 사는 애너벨은 갖가지 색깔의 털실이 들어있는 조그만 상자를 발견합니다. 애너벨은 털실로 스웨터를 떠 입고, 남은 털실로 강아지 마스에게도 한 벌 떠 줍니다. 또한, 털실로 친구들에게 스웨터를 떠 주고, 엄마 아빠를 비롯한 모든 마을 사람들에게도 스웨터를 떠 주지요. 사람들은 금방 실이 다 떨어질 거라 생각했지만, 그렇게 여러 벌을 떴는데도 털실은 계속 남아 있습니다.

에너벨은 남은 털실로 마을 사람들은 물론이고 숲 속의 동물들과 나무들과 집들과 자동차 등 눈에 보이는 모든 것에 따뜻한 털옷을 떠서 입혀줬습니다. 추운데다가 검댕으로 칙칙하던 마을은 이제 알록달록하고 따뜻한 옷을 입은 마을로 변하게 됩니다.

신기한 털실을 가진 놀라운 아이의 이야기는 온 세상으로 퍼지게 되고, 배를 타고 마을에 찾아온 귀족은 엄청나게 많은 돈을 줄 테니 상자를 팔라고 하지만 애너벨은 팔지 않습니다. 결국 귀족은 상자를 훔쳐 자신의 성으로 돌아가지만, 잔뜩 기대하고 뚜껑을 연 상자에는 놀랍게도 텅 비어 있습니다. 귀족은 애너벨에게 저주를 퍼부으며 상자를 바다로 던져버리지만, 버려진 상자는 파도를 타고 다시 애너벨에게 돌아옵니다.

이 책은 ‘여백이 많은 우아한 글과 그림에 진지한 유머가 스며 있다. 이 기발하고 멋진 이야기는 한 아이의 창의성과 자기 주변의 세상을 바꾸는 능력에 대한 조용한 찬사이다.’라는 평가를 받으며 2013년 칼데콧 명예상을 받았습니다.

글은 사건의 진행을 담담하게 이야기합니다. 애너벨이 털실을 뜨는 동기나 애너벨의 감정은 이야기하지 않지요. 절제된 글이 이렇게 여백을 남기고, 그림이 글의 여백을 채워 줍니다. 장식적 요소를 배제하고 기하학적 형태를 주로 활용한 그림은 애너벨의 힘으로 변화해 가는 세상을 표현합니다. 흑백과 색채, 딱딱하고 차가움과 부드럽고 포근함으로 대비되는 마을의 변화를 잘 드러내지요. 스웨터를 입은 동물들의 멀뚱한 표정과 옷을 입는다는 상상을 하지 못했던 집과 차, 나무마저 스웨터를 입은 모습이 진지한 이야기에 웃음을 줍니다.

우리가 살아가는 동안 가지게 되는 재물과 재주는 상자 속의 털실과도 같고, 누가 어떤 마음으로 쓰는지에 따라 빈상자가 될 수도, 털실로 가득찬 상자가 될 수도 있으며, 세상을 바꾸는 재물과 재주는 바로 우리 안에 있다는 것을 어린이들에게 깨닫게 해주는 내용입니다.
