이 책의 저자인 바바라 매클린톡은 국내에서 "아델과 사이먼," "메리와 생쥐," "빨간 장갑"을 비롯해서 다수의 번역서가 출간된 저명한 그림책 작가입니다. 미국에서 태어난 그녀는 사진과 그림에 관련된 일을 하는 부모님 덕분에 자연스럽게 그림책 작가가 되었다고 합니다. 『아델과 사이먼』은 2006년 뉴욕 타임스 올해의 책으로 뽑혔으며, 『달리아(Dahlia)』로 보스톤 혼 북 아너 상을 받았습니다.

붉은 머리 애니는 스포츠카를 좋아합니다. 어느날 저녁, 애니는 스포츠카 드라이버가 되어서 전국을 여행하는 상상을 합니다.

핼멧을 쓰고, 장갑을 끼고, 스포츠카로 뛰어 오른 후 출발~~~

땅은 평평하고 도로는 일직선으로 쭉 뻗어 있네요. 빨간 머리를 휘날리며 최고 속도로 달려갑니다.

높은 산을 만나면 추운 산꼭대기까지 거침없이 올라가고, 덮고 건조한 사막지역에서는 멋진 아치 바위 밑을 통과합니다.

시원한 숲속 길을 달리다보면 저 끝에 다리가 보이기 시작하네요. 넓은 현수교 다리를 지나가면 마침내 대도시에 진입.

대도시에는 사람도 많고 차들도 많아서 교통정체가 심합니다. 애니는 차들 사이로 빠르게 차를 몰고 갑니다.

그리고 자동차 경주장으로 들어가서 다른 레이싱카들을 모두 제쳐 버립니다.

자동차 운전으로 피곤해지기 시작할 즈음, 눈에 익은 길과 집들이 나타납니다. 집에 도착한 애니는 곧바로 차를 몰고 2층 자기방으로 직행합니다...
