나이 들어서 큰 집에 덜렁 혼자 살게 된 러브라이트 부인은 마음이 쓸쓸해서인지 추위를 잘 탑니다. 벽난로를 피워 놓고 소파에 앉아 신발을 벗은 후 스툴 위에 두 발을 올리고는 따뜻한 온기를 느끼는 것을 좋아합니다. 그러다가 러브라이트 부인은 고양이를 무릎 위에 올려 놓으면 한결 더 따뜻해 질 것으로 생각합니다. 식료품을 배달하는 딜란씨에게 부탁해서 조그만 아기 고양이를 키우게 된 러브라이트 부인은 고양이의 이름을 퍼리(Purrly), 즉 그르렁이로 지었습니다.
부인과 퍼리의 첫 만남은 환상적이었습니다. 신문지 위에 앉아서 뒤로 45도의 귀여운 각도로 고개를 돌리고는 부인을 쳐다보는 퍼리를 보는 순간, 부인은 감탄의 비명을 질렀지요. 하지만, 고양이를 키워 본 사람들은 이해를 합니다만, 고양이는 항상 주인 뜻대로 따라오지는 않습니다. 러브라이트 부인이 두발을 올려야할 스툴 위에 몸을 돌돌 말고 엎드려서 벽난로 불을 쬐고 잠을 자는 퍼리... 졸지에 두발을 뻗을 스툴을 고양이에게 빼았겨 버린 부인은 어르고 달래도 퍼리는 부인의 무릎 위에 올라올 생각을 하지 않고... 무엇보다도 부인의 기대와는 달리 퍼리는 Purr, 즉 그르렁 소리를 내지 않았습니다. 퍼리를 퍼레스(Purrless), 즉 그르렁거리지 않는 고양이로 이름을 바꿔부르는 부인과 고양이는 기나긴 애증의 세월을 함께 살아가게 되고...
