이 세상에서 가장 부유한 파우스토는 부유층 자신이 세상 만물을 모두 다 가졌다고 믿고 이를 확인해보려고 길을 나섭니다. 길을 가다가 만난 꽃, 양, 나무, 연못, 산들은 모두 파우스토의 소유가 맞다고 확인해 줬습니다. 파우스토는 꽃향기를 즐기거나, 양의 부드러운 털을 쓰다듬거나, 바람결에 춤추는 나뭇가지를 감상하는 대신에 오로지 이 세상의 모든 것들이 "내 것"이라는 소유욕에서 벗어나지 못합니다. 그리고 그 욕심은 점차 집착으로 변해서 누구도 소유할 수 없는 연못, 산, 바다라는 대자연까지 자신의 것이라고 주장합니다.

하지만 배를 타고 바다에 나갔을 때, 바다만큼은 절대로 파우스토에게 굴복하지 않네요. 파우스토는 자신의 주장을 굽히지 않는 바다를 혼내주기 위해 발로 바다를 쾅하고 밟는 순간, 파우스토는 그만 바다에 풍덩 빠져버리게 되고...

지나친 욕심으로 인해 초래된 인과응보 라는 공정한 결말을 통해 독자들에게 확실한 교훈을 남기는 현대판 우화입니다.
