레이프는 떡갈나무에 달려있는 녹색의 조그만 잎사귀입니다. 날씨가 점점 추워지면서 가을이 오자, 레이프는 낙엽이 되어 땅에 떨어지면 다치지 않을까 걱정이 되었습니다. 레이프의 친구 잎사귀인 로렐은 둘이 힘을 합쳐 레이프가 걱정하고 있는 문제를 해결해 보기로 합니다.

잔나무가지로 그물망을 만들기. 그런데 그물이 너무 엉성해서 그물 위로 안전하게 착륙할 수 엾을 것 같았어요. 레이프는 그물을 땅에 버렸습니다.

넝쿨줄기로 레이프의 몸을 나뭇가지에 묶어버리기. 그런데 묶여있으니까 너무 조여서 견딜 수가 없네요. 또 실패.

나무껍질과 이끼로 연을 만들어서 타고 내려가기. 그런데 연줄이 나뭇가지에 엉켜버리는 바람에 또 실패.

그외에도 그네, 트렘폴린, 낙하산 등 다양한 시도를 했습니다만, 생각과는 다르게 모두 실패했어요. 그때마다 다른 나뭇잎들은 괜한 시간 낭비라며 그냥 땅에 떨어지라고 말하네요.

시간이 흘러서 바람은 점점 차가와지고, 점점 세졌어요. 그리고 갑자기 강한 바람이 불더니 레이프는 더 이상 버티지 못하고 로렐과 함께 속절없이 땅으로 떨어졌어요. 그런데 레이프와 로렐이 떨어진 곳은 놀랍게도 그동안 다양한 아이디어를 시도하다가 잘 되지 않아서 땅으로 버린 것들이 쌓여 있던 곳이었어요. 덕분에 레이프와 로렐은 안전하게 착륙한 후, 걸어서 땅으로 내려왔어요...

성취를 중시하는 문화에서 아이들은 실패를 두려워해서 시도조차 하지 않는 경우가 많습니다. 하지만 시도하고 또 시도하다보면, 이런 실패가 쌓여서 성공으로 가는 밑거름이 된다는 교훈을 깨닫게 됩니다.
