Children may well identify with the baby animals pictured, all of whom love their parents for all that they do for their children, whether it be a daddy emperor penguin that "keeps me safe and warm" or a mother panda that "gives me great big hugs."

In both words and pictures, these books introduce animal parents as they care for their young. A simple analogy is set up between a human child's narration of how he or she is nurtured, and the corresponding behavior among sheep, chickens, pigs, etc., is shown in soft, realistic, full-color illustrations. Sturdy stock pages make these books an excellent choice for sharing; labels above each picture identify the creatures depicted. Roger B. Hirschland's How Animals Care for Their Babies (National Geographic, 1987) is a more scientific presentation of this subject, but for a slightly older audience.
