어린이 그림책의 명작 반열에 오른 책이며, 국내에서는 "돼지책"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다. 집안에서 가족 구성원의 역할과 협조, 특히 엄마의 역할에 대해 다시 한번 생각토록 하는 책입니다. 책 표지에는 돼지문양의 벽지 앞에서 엄마가 아빠와 두 아들을 업고 있는 모습에서 이 책이 의도하는 내용을 상징적으로 보여줍니다. (서양사람들은 등에 짐을 메기는 해도 사람은 잘 업지 않더군요.) Piggot네 집에서 아빠와 두 아들은 항상 엄마에게 요구만 합니다. 밥달라, 옷달라... 엄마는 직장에 다니면서 식사준비, 빨래, 설겆이, 청소, 심지어 침구정리까지 혼자 다 합니다. 어느날 집에 돌아온 아빠와 두 아들은 "당신들은 돼지야!"라는 쪽지를 남기고 엄마가 사라진 것을 발견합니다. 이때부터 행복 끝, 고생 시작... 음식은 태우기 일쑤고, 싱크대에는 설겆이 하지 않은 그릇이 쌓여만 갑니다. 옷에는 얼룩이 덕지덕지 묻기 시작하고 집안은 마치 돼지 우리같이 변해갑니다. 급기야는 먹을 것이 떨어져서 돼지같이 엎드려서 음식 부스러기를 주워먹고 있는데 문이 열리며 엄마가 들어섭니다. 아빠와 두 아들은 엄마 앞에서 무릎을 꿇고 "Please come back" 훌쩍이며 애원을 합니다. 물론 그 이후로 세 남자의 못된 버릇은 말끔히 사라졌지요. 아빠는 설겆이와 다리미질을 손수하고, 아이들은 침구정리를 손수합니다. 그리고 엄마를 위해 세 남자는 맛있는 요리도 하지요. 진정한 행복을 느끼면서... 이야기도 재미있고, 교훈적인 내용이 담겨있으며, Anthony Browne 특유의 숨어있는 그림찾기의 재미도 맛볼 수 있습니다. 이 책에는 무수하게 많은 돼지 그림들이 숨어 있습니다. 첫 페이지를 넘기면 식탁 위의 시리얼통에 그려진 돼지 그림부터 시작해서, 돼지모양의 아빠 그림자, 양복에 달려 있는 돼지 모양의 꽃, 소세지를 먹는 장면에서 돼지모양의 단추모습, 돼지 저금통, 돼지 모양의 콘센트와 문 손잡이 등등등... And readers will have a fine time rooting out all the piggy touches Browne has littered throughout the illustrations.
