Children's Literature A.J. and the gang are back again with another "Weird School" adventure. It is just weeks before Halloween and hapless Mr. Granite is surprised by a student teacher joining the class. Mary is the Goth daughter of Principal Klutz and is visiting from England. A.J., who professes a fear of ghosts, believes she just may be a vampire. Mary has no intention of becoming a teacher, as she is following her heavy metal rocker boyfriend Zack as he pursues his career. Zack has a penchant for climbing in the classroom window and snogging Mary, much to the disgust of A.J. The two regale the class with information about England that leaves A.J. confused, as he just doesn't "get" the British vernacular. Zack writes a successful song, "I Love Dirt" that goes viral on You Tube and leads to a Saturday Night Live appearance and the rest as they say is history. For Halloween the kids dress in costume and sing the "I Love Dirt" song as Mary and Zack are married. Finally Mr. Granite is able to get to the math lesson on page twenty-three. Kids just eat these books up and care very little that they lack substance. A.J.'s confusion over the use of the word "bloody" gets tedious, but Mr. Granite's never-ending struggle to keep the class on task will elicit giggles. The plot is straightforward and progress quickly although there are few surprises. Fans of the series will find this satisfying and it is harmless fare for readers needing to practice their skills. |
