Run for your lives! Children's Literature In this eleventh installment of the "My Weird School Daze" series, A.J. and some of his elementary school friends have a problem. Their moms have started a catering business, and that means the kids have to attend "After School Kids' Kare," run by Mr. Tony. Mr. Tony tries to make his after-hours school fun, but it is a tough sell to these kids, who would rather be at home watching television. When Mr. Tony reveals that he wants to get into the Guinness Book of World Records by making the world's largest pizza, however, all the kids get into the act. Unfortunately, things begin to unravel quickly for Mr. Tony. This book is designed for adolescent boys, but unfortunately a lot of the humor falls flat. Some kids may laugh at the language (vomitorium, doody, dumbhead, etc.) but often the book seems to be dumbed down for an audience that deserves better. A number of the jokes and wordplays are repeated to little or no effect (one wonders about the lack of editorial guidance). Probably some of the most serious pitfalls in the book involve the implied lessons here: Mr. Tony fails in his attempt to make the world's largest pizza, but that is fine because now he will write a book that will become a movie. The lessons, like the humor, could use some work. |
