그리스 당시 학교, 학용품 이름이 나오네요. 요즘은 첨단 노트북 이름에 붙여쓰더군요.

정맥과 동맥을 구분하고 맥박을 발견한 Herophilius도 나오네요.
물시계, 파이프 오르간을 만든 Ctesibius도 나오네요.
구두점과 문법을 발명한 Aristophanes도 나오네요.
circumference 와 arc 의 관계를 grapefruit in half 로 보여주네요.
'every circle is made up of 360 degrees'를 이용해서,
작은 secton의 arc만 구해도, 그 각도에 비례해서 circumference를 구할수 있다는 걸 보여주네요.
그런데, 빛의 직진성을 이용한 각도 재기(내각(the inside angle)의 평행이동, 엇각 동일)는 어려워요.
두 도시간 거리재기도 당시엔 큰 일이였군요.
당시엔 누구나 지구가 구체(sphere)인지 알고 있었지만, 얼만큼 큰 구체인지(how big a sphere) 밝혀낸 게 에라토스테네스라는군요.
또 콜롬부스는 에라토스테네스의 해답을 알지 못했고, 그 보다 작을 줄 알았다는군요. 그래서 아메리카를 인도라고 생각했나봐요.
또 한편, 만약 콜롬부스가 지구가 자기 생각보다 훨씬 더 큰 줄을 알았다면, 아예 서쪽으로 항해할 시도조차 하지 않았을 거라네요. ^^;;
make up 용법 하나 알았네요.
마지막에서 curiosity의 중요성을 지적한 저자의 글이 인상적이네요.
All knowledge builds on existing knowledge. But it taked the curiosity and inspiration of a man like Eratosthenes to figure out how to use that knowledge to answer old questions and create new ones that will alter civilization and our view of the world for years to come.
