 건축에 관한 재밌고 논리적인 설명 |

건축물(building)을 다리(bridges), 터널(tunnels), 댐(dams), 돔(domes), 빌딩(skyscrapers)로 나눠 소개하는데
다리(bridge)도 5가지로 나뉜다는군요.

다리에서 유심히 보는 점은,
기본골조(fundamental design)와 주변과의 조화(it's relationship to the site)라는 군요.
다리가 갖는 의미는 '인간이 물을 건넌다(to span water).'는 점이라는군요.
로마인들이 만든 아치교는
'아래로 배가 충분히 지나야' 하고, '위로 사람이 가파르지않게 오르내려야'함을 모두 충족시키는 형태랍니다.
강상(riverbed) 가운데 교각(pier) 만들기는
여름철 건기를 기다려, 또 'coffer dam ( watertight wooden wall)'으로 방수방벽을 쌓고서 시작했답니다.
아치(arch)모양은
제일 마지막에 박는(the last piece of stone) 가운데 돌(keystone)이 화룡점정인 줄 알고 있었는데
그 위에 다시 돌들을 쌓아 다져줘야만 완성된다는군요.
the more the wedge-shaped stones are compressed, the stronger the arch will become.
아치와 '돌의 성질(중력법칙)'을 설명하는 문장은 코믹합니다.
the uppermost stones would want to fall(it's one of the things stones do best), and this in turn would push the side of the arch outward.
