1971 년 뉴베리 영예 수상작이네요.
책의 메시지는 '믿음(종교)에 관한 질문'이네요.
그리고, 믿음 너머에 있는, 'knowing the truth' 과 'telling the truth' 의 차이, 사실과 믿음 사이 모순 정당화 또는 피할 수 없는 허무주의 등등.
작가는 책 머리에 이렇게 적어 놨네요.
Facts are the barren branches on which we hang the dear, obscuring foliage of our dreams
마을 어른들은, 혼란스런 주인공 Egan에게, 이렇게 말하는군요.
"Nephew, I'll tell you what I think.
I think it doesn't really matter.
The only thing that matters is whether you want to believe that he is there or not.
And if your mind is made up, all the facts in the world won't make a difference."
누구 말이 옳을까요?
존재론의 문제가 아니라 해석학의 문제인것은 알겠지만, 그래도 여전히 남아있을 믿음의 문제, 밀려들 두려움 혹은 상실감.
