남북전쟁이 한창이던 1860년대 초 미국 중서부의 위스콘신 주 한 마을에 정착한 개척민 우드론 가족. 주인공 캐디는 엄마나 언니처럼 다소곳이 수를 놓거나 부엌일을 거드는 소녀는 아니었습니다. 오히려 오빠 톰, 남동생 워런과 함께 위스콘신 메노모니 숲 일대를 휘젓고 다니는 말괄량이지요. 오솔길을 따라 가면 나타나는 ‘굴뚝 절벽’, 봄이면 대도시의 소식을 싣고 오는 ‘조그만 증기선’, 여름과 겨울에만 문을 여는 학교, 아이들의 심장을 두 방망이질하게 하는 인디언의 ‘머리 가죽 허리띠’. 이 모든 것이 캐디와 오빠 톰, 남동생 워런의 추억입니다.
