온 몸에 예쁜 무늬가 있는 꼬마 코끼리 엘리엇은 대도시에서 혼자 살고 있습니다. 너무 키가 작아서 대도시에서 살기에는 불편한 점이 많습니다. 지하철을 탈 때도 인파에 밟히지 않도록 조심해야 하고, 문 손잡이를 잡기도 쉽지 않으며, 냉장고 윗칸에 있는 음식을 꺼내기도 쉽지 않습니다. 세면대나 식탁도 너무 높아서 발판을 사용해야 하지요. 그래도 엘리엇은 길가에 핀 작은 꽃을 보거나 길에 떨어진 예쁜 소품을 주으면서 대도시의 삶을 즐깁니다. 무엇보다도 엘리엇이 가장 좋아하는 것은 제과점에서 파는 맛있는 컵케익... 그런데 제과점의 계산대가 높아서 컵케익을 사려고 돈을 내밀어도 아무도 보지를 못합니다.
컵케익을 살 수 없어서 너무나도 슬픈 엘리엇은 집으로 돌아가다가 자기보다 훨씬 작은 생쥐를 만나게 됩니다. 엘리엇은 자신의 코를 이용해서 생쥐가 음식을 구할 수 있도록 도와주고, 둘은 절친이 됩니다. 그리고 제과점에 가서도 엘리엇과 생쥐는 힘을 합쳐서 컵케익을 사는데 성공합니다. 엘리엇은 그토록 원했던 컵케익을 얻는데 성공하고, 그리고 컵케익보다 더욱 소중한 친구를 얻게 됩니다...
