Readers are told--and captivatingly shown--that ``ADVERBS work terrifically when answering specifically . . . `How?' `How often?' `When?' and `Where?' '' A glorious blue-and-white Victorian house, for example, drips gingerbread trim across one spread: it was painted ``RECENTLY.'' The question, ``WHY do pandas eat bamboo?'' is posed against a comparatively spare spread of three beguiling creatures devouring green leaves. If this book is a bit more confusing than the earlier volumes, it is chiefly because of the inherent diversity of the topic--young grammarians may well be puzzled that the words in a bride's vow of ``YES, INDEED, FOREVER'' are equated with the ``how'' of ``HOW do you do?'' Nevertheless, Heller once again offers an informative English lesson that is great fun to read and rife with theatrics.

A grammar lesson has never been such fun. Heller approaches this part of speech in an organized, logical manner. She gives examples for the ways adverbs can be identified and used. The adverbs are boldly capitalized so they stand out in the rhyming sentences, making them easy for the reader to identify. The attractive graphic-style illustrations draw the reader into the book and demonstrate the adverb being discussed. The author cautions the reader to remember: "don't ever use NOT and NEVER together" for "you will always be in trouble if your negatives are double!" This is part of the "World of Language" series covering all aspects of grammar.

BACKWARD... LIKEWISE... COUNTERCLOCKWISE''--a succinct summary appropriately framed by two pairs of gymnasts, their backs arched in opposing curves). The end-page conclusion is unduly abrupt; still, what other grammar manual will leave students longing for more? Just right to lighten up the lesson, even at the high-school level; Heller's admonitions are not only more fun but often clearer than more earnest explanations. |

 문법책이라는 생각 없이 읽어도 좋은 책 |
이 책을 문법책이라고 생각하고 읽어주려면 좀 마음이 답답해지겠죠.
좀 난간한 부분들이 있거든요. 부사라는 말 자체도 아이들에게
아직은 알려줄 필요도 없는데다 뚜렷한 스토리가 있는 것도
아니니까요.

아니니까요.
하지만 영어책을 쭉 접해온 아이라면 5세부터라도 엄마와 이야기하면서
읽을 수는 있을 것 같네요. 그림에 대한 표현 문장이 부사의 활용과 종류를
감안해서 되어 있어서 읽다보면 자연스럽게 문법을 터득할 거란
생각이 들어요. 우리가 우리 말을 배우면서 주어 서술어 별로 구분 안하고
쓰듯이 말이죠.

이 책은 부사를 공부하기 위한 문법책인데, 정말 예쁜 그림이 가득하지요. 내용으로는
where, there, when, recently, how, decently, how often, frequently, rather, very, extremely,
more, somewhat, too, so, quite, really, yes, indeed, forever, no, not, never 등등 나오다가 ly를 붙인
형용사도 나옵니다.
사실 이 책을 샀던 이유는 단순히 그림이 너무 예뻐서였죠. 돛단배, 펭귄, 발레신발, 집, 꽃, 올빼미, 악수하는
손, 지도, 팬더, 고양이, 램프의 요정, 기구, 마루 운동, 신랑신부, 젖소, 시계, 달팽이, 물고기 등등이 나온답니다.
생각보다 그림이 너무 많아 깜짝 놀랐고, 내용도 그림과 적절히 매치되어 부사를 익히기에 좋은 책이랍니다.
어린 아이들에게는 그림책으로, 좀더 큰 아이들에게는 문법 책으로써의 역할을 톡톡히 할 수 있는 화려한 색상의
그림 문법책이네요. 제가 봐도 공부 되는 내용이라 아이와 함께 보니 일석 이조네요. ^^
