우리는 모두 기억을 담고 있는 풍선들을 마음에 품고 있습니다. 나이가 어릴수록 기억의 풍선은 적지만, 나이가 들어감에 따라 점점 풍선들도 늘어나고, 할아버지가 되면 수많은 기억의 풍선들을 지니고 삽니다.

제임스는 할아버지의 풍선들 속에 들어있는 옛날 이야기를 듣는 것을 좋아합니다.

- 블랙베리를 따서 집에 왔는데, 얼굴에 온통 블랙베리 얼룩이 묻은 것을 보고 젖소가 놀라서 며칠간 젖이 나오지 않았던 일.

- 사랑했던 강아지 잭이 나비를 쫓아다녔던 기억.

- 할머니와 결혼식을 올렸던 날, 별빛 아래서 춤을 췄던 기억.

- 그리고 할아버지가 제일 좋아하는 기억의 풍선은 손자 제임스와 함께 낚시를 가서 캠핑을 했던 일...

하지만 최근들어 할아버지의 기억의 풍선에 문제가 생긴 것이 분명해 보입니다. 때로는 같은 말을 계속 반복해서 얘기하고, 때로는 기억의 풍선들이 할아버지를 하나 둘 떠나는데도 할아버지는 알아채지도 못합니다.

제임스는 너무 걱정이 되어서 엄마 아빠에게 말하지만, 나이가 들면 자연스러운 현상이라고 하네요.

할아버지는 마침내 손자 제임스와 공유했던 낚시에 관한 기억의 풍선마저 하늘로 날려버리고 말았어요. 제임스는 너무 슬퍼서 할아버지에게 왜 그 풍선을 보내버렸냐고 화를 내고 울기도 했지요. 그리고 마침내 할아버지는 모든 기억의 풍선을 잃어버리고 말았어요....

하지만 할아버지는 자신의 기억들을 제임스에게 얘기해줬기 때문에, 이제 할아버지의 기억의 풍선들은 제임스가 지니고 있지요. 비록 할아버지는 이제 과거를 기억하지 못해서 손자 제임스에게 재미있는 이야기를 들려주지 못하지만, 이제는 제임스가 할아버지에게 재미있는 이야기를 들려줍니다...

어린이 동화책이나 그림책에서는 쉽게 접할 수 없는 주제인 "치매"에 관한 내용을 "기억의 풍선"을 이용해서 어린 독자들이 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 만든 책입니다.

James’s Grandpa has the best balloons because he has the best memories. He has balloons showing Dad when he was young and Grandma when they were married. Grandpa has balloons about camping and Aunt Nelle’s poor cow. Grandpa also has a silver balloon filled with the memory of a fishing trip he and James took together.

But when Grandpa’s balloons begin to float away, James is heartbroken. No matter how hard he runs, James can’t catch them. One day, Grandpa lets go of the silver balloon—and he doesn’t even notice!

Grandpa no longer has balloons of his own. But James has many more than before. It’s up to him to share those balloons, one by one.
