Yes?의 저자인 Chris Raschka의 또 하나의 Caldecott 수상작입니다. 할머니, 할아버지와 어린 손녀 사이의 정겨운 일상을 아이의 눈으로 따뜻하게 그린 아름다운 책입니다. 할머니와 할아버지는 벽돌길을 따라가면 나타나는 커다란 집에서 살고 있습니다. 엄마와 아빠가 맞벌이를 하기 때문에 주인공 소녀는 이 벽돌길을 따라 할머니와 할아버지 집으로 가곤 합니다. 하지만 할머니와 할아버지 집에 들어가기 전에 반드시 거쳐야 하는 곳이 바로 부엌에 있는 "Hello, Goodbye Window"입니다. 부엌은 할머니와 할아버지가 가장 많은 시간을 보내는 곳이기 때문에, 집 안으로 들어가기 전에 소녀는 창문을 두드린 후 몰래 숨거나 창문에 얼굴을 대서 할머니와 할아버지를 깜짝 놀래켜 주기도 합니다. 만일 할머니와 할아버지가 먼저 소녀를 발견하면 창문 너머로 손을 흔들어 주거나, 우스꽝스러운 표정을 지어주기도 하고, 때로는 까꿍놀이를 하기도 합니다. 부엌의 창문을 통해 집 안으로 들어가기 전에 여러가지 방법으로 정겨운 맞이를 하네요. 커다란 부엌에서 소녀는 테이블에 앉아 그림을 그리기도 하고, 많은 서랍 속의 물건들을 꺼내서 놀기도 합니다. 부엌의 선반 밑에는 소녀가 어려서부터 그려 온 많은 그림들이 벽에 붙여져 있으며, 그 아래 싱크대에서는 소녀가 더 어렸을 때 할머니가 목욕을 시켜주기도 했습니다. 할아버지는 하모니카로 유일하게 연주할 수 있는 "오 수잔나" 노래를 여러가지 방법으로 불러 줍니다. 때로는 느리게, 때로는 빠르게, 때로는 앉아서, 때로는 서서... 할아버지는 물을 마시면서 동시에 하모니카를 불 수 있다고 말합니다만, 소녀는 한번도 본 적은 없습니다. 해가 저물면 할아버지와 함께 창문에 얼굴을 비쳐봅니다. 그러면 마치 밖에서 안을 들여다 보는 것 같이 보입니다. 할아버지가 소녀에게 "밖에서 뭐하니? 들어와서 저녁 먹으렴"하고 장난스럽게 말을 하면, 소녀는 "하지만 할아버지와 함께 밖에 있는걸요."라고 대답을 합니다. 그러면 할아버지는 창문에 우스꽝스러운 표정을 지어서 소녀를 웃겨줍니다. 밤이 되어서 잠자리에 들 시간이 되면 소녀는 할머니와 함께 창을 통해 보이는 밤하늘의 별들을 향해 굿나잇 인사를 하고, 아침이 되면 역시 창을 통해 보이는 정원을 향해 굿모닝 인사를 합니다. 아침 식사는 할아버지가 만들어 줍니다. 소녀가 제일 좋아하는 것은 바나나와 건포도가 들어 있는 오트밀입니다. 할아버지는 이것들을 부엌 찬장 안쪽에 숨겨 놓았지만, 소녀는 어디에 있는지 모두 찾아내었지요. 오전에는 할머니와 함께 정원도 가꾸고, 자전거도 타며, 나뭇가지와 도토리들을 줍기도 하고, 공을 차며 놀기도 합니다. 어떨 때는 할아버지가 소녀에게 호스로 물을 뿌리며 뒤를 쫓기도 하며, 그럴 때는 할머니는 고개를 절레절레 흔듭니다. 소녀는 때로는 창문 옆에 앉아서 밖을 내다보곤 합니다. 할머니는 이 창문이 요술창문이기 때문에 창문을 보면서 간절히 원하면 이루어질 수 있다고 말해줍니다. 소녀는 창문을 보면서 티라노 공룡, 피자 배달원, 영국여왕 등이 집을 방문하는 상상을 합니다. 엄마와 아빠가 일을 마치고 소녀를 데리러 오면, 소녀는 한 편으로는 기쁘기도 하고, 할머니 할아버지와 헤어질 생각을 하면 슬프기도 합니다. 그리고 할머니 할아버지 집을 떠날 때는 부엌 창 밖에 서서 굿바이 뽀뽀를 날려 보내줍니다. 엄마 아빠와 함께 집으로 돌아가다가 뒤돌아서 바라보면 할머니 할아버지 집에는 많은 창문이 있지만, Hello, Goodbye Window는 오직 하나 밖에 없습니다. 그리고 소녀는 생각합니다. 나중에 커서 자신의 집을 갖게 되면 아주 특별한 Hello, Goodbye Window를 만들겠다고... 그리고 나중에 할머니가 되면 자기의 짝이 누구가 될지는 모르지만 하모니카를 멋지게 불 수 있으면 좋겠다고... 국내에서는 "안녕 빠이빠이 창문"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다. 큰 사이즈의 튼튼한 하드커버책입니다. Booklist Two well-known names come together in a book that speaks to the real lives of children and their experiences. The young narrator visits her grandparents, Nanna and Poppy, in their big house. They explore Nanna's garden, and Poppy plays his harmonica. The narrator rides her bike and takes a nap, "and nothing happens till I get up." Looking out the picture window, the "hello, goodbye window," she sees the pizza guy, and, more fancifully, a dinosaur. She also spots her parents coming to pick her up. The curly-haired girl is happy to see them, but sad because it means the end of the visit. The window imagery is less important than the title would make it seem. More intrinsic is Juster's honest portrayal of a child's perceptions (a striped cat in the yard is a tiger) and emotions (being happy and sad at the same time "just happens that way sometimes"). Raschka's swirling lines, swaths, and dabs of fruity colors seem especially vibrant, particularly in the double-page spreads, which have ample room to capture both the tender moments between members of the interracial family and the exuberance of spending time in the pulsating outdoors, all flowers, grass, and sky. |
