옛날, 메소아메리카의 신들은 인간을 창조하기 위해 여러 번 시도했습니다. 그러나 신들의 시도는 모두 실패하였고, 신들은 인간을 창조하는 것이 너무 힘들고 지쳐서 포기하기 시작했습니다.
하지만 신들 중에서 오직 한 명, 깃털뱀의 신인 케찰코아틀(Quetzalcoatl)만이 포기하지 않았습니다. 그는 인간을 창조하기 위해 먼저 지하세계의 지배자인 밀크탈테쿠틀리(Mictlantecuhtli)가 지키고 있는 신성한 창조의 뼈를 손에 넣어야 했습니다. 깃털뱀의 신인 케찰코아틀은 지팡이, 방패, 망토, 그리고 행운을 가져다주는 껍질 장식을 몸에 지니고 인간 창조를 위한 위험한 모험을 시작했습니다.
창조의 뼈가 있는 지하세계에 도착하기 위해서는 모두 9개의 위험한 지역을 통과해야 하는데, 첫번째 장애물인 넓은 강에서 그를 도와 줄 신성한 개 조로틀을 만나게 되고, 둘은 이후 동반자가 되어서 거친 강물, 무너지는 산, 예리한 유리로 덮여있는 산, 눈보라가 몰아치는 동토지대, 강풍이 부는 지역, 화살비가 내리는 들판, 재규어가 우굴거리는 밀림, 악어가 지키고 있는 강, 짙은 안개가 끼어있는 지역 등 총 9개의 장애물을 무사히 돌파하고 마침내 지하세계의 지배자인 밀크탈테쿠틀리를 만나게 됩니다.
하지만 지하세계의 지배자인 밀크탈테쿠틀리는 케찰코아틀에게 마지막 테스트를 통과해야 신성한 뼈를 주겠다고 하는데...
