윌리엄 캄쾀바는 가뭄에 시달리는 아프리카의 작은 나라 말라위에 살았습니다. 윌리엄이 사는 마을은 항상 먹을 것이 부족하고, 전기는 구경도 할 수 없었습니다. 어려운 집안 형편 때문에 학교를 그만둔 윌리엄은 어느 날 마을의 작은 도서관에서 과학 그림책 속에서 풍차를 보게 되었습니다. 윌리엄은 자신이 직접 풍차를 만들어야겠다는 결심을 했습니다. 풍차를 만들 재료가 없던 윌리엄은 그날부터 온종일 쓰레기장을 뒤지기 시작했습니다. 고장난 자전거 바퀴와 체인, 빨랫줄로 쓰던 전선, 트랙터에서 떼어낸 환풍기, 기계에서 빼낸 베어링과 볼트, 자전거 전조등에 있던 작은 발전기 등 여러 부품들을 모아 풍차를 만들었습니다. 마을 사람들은 전부 윌리엄이 미쳤다고 손가락질 했습니다. 하지만 마침내 윌리엄의 풍차가 움직이고 작은 전구에 불이 들어오자, 마을 사람들도 윌리엄에게 박수를 보냈습니다.
