어린이 그림책의 거장인 모리스 센닥의 그림은 In the night kitchen에서와 같은 진한 윤곽선의 유머러스한 분위기를 풍기는 작품이 있는가 하면, Dear Mili나 Outside Over There에서 볼 수 있는 펜을 이용해서 섬세하게 표현한 작품이 있습니다. 이 책은 전자에 속하는 작품으로 아서 요링크스와 모리스 센닥 콤비의 풍부한 상상력을 엿볼 수 있습니다.
중세시대, 이태리의 탐험가 쥬세페 지아위니는 왕의 지원을 받아 보물을 찾기 위해 중국을 향해 떠납니다. 오랜 항해 끝에 도착한 곳은 거인들이 사는 마이아미라는 곳입니다. 옛날 아메리카를 발견한 사람들도 인도와 중국을 찾아나선 사람들이었듯이 쥬세페도 미국 남쪽 마이아미를 중국으로 오해한 것이죠. 그 곳에 사는 거인들을 본 쥬세페는 거인을 데려다가 쇼를 하면 큰 인기를 끌 수 있겠다는 생각을 했어요. 거인을 설득해서 이태리로 돌아온 후, 열심히 춤 연습을 시켜서 파리의 극장에서 드디어 첫 공연을 열게 되었죠. 하지만 거인이 춤을 추기 시작하자 관객들을 혼비백산해서 도망을 치고...
이야기 줄거리는 단순하고 짧지만 그 안에는 형식에 구애받지 않고 자유분방하게 튀는 작가의 상상력을 옅볼 수 있습니다. 시대 배경도 처음에는 중세였는데, 점차 책 후반부로 갈수록 현대로 바뀝니다. 나중에는 비행기까지 나타납니다. 문명을 등진 거인들의 모습도 예상을 뒤집습니다. 구두를 신고 티셔츠를 입고 있을 뿐 아니라 여자 거인은 메니큐어까지 칠하고 있지요. 이러한 이야기 속의 모순들이 어른들의 눈에는 이상하게 보일 수도 있겠지만 책을 논리적으로 보기보다는 감성적으로 보는 어린이들에게 신나는 상상의 세계를 불러 일으킵니다. (하지만 이런 스타일의 책은 모든 사람들을 만족시키지는 않으므로 구입시 심시숙고하시기 바랍니다)

Two giants of children's literature tell a comic-book story of a Gulliver-Columbus-knight, who discovers the Jewish natives of Miami in all their primitive splendor. Giaweeni leaves Italy to look for China, but he swerves a little and "brilliantly" stumbles on a lost tribe of dancing giants, the Mishbookers of Miami. They "led a simple primitive life. They ate. They slept. They went bowling." He shows them the modern wonders of the telescope and iced tea. They show him their beads and comfortable beach chairs. He brings a giant back alive to become a star in Europe, but the show bombs, and the giant goes back home to Miami. Some of the in-jokes and the parody, verbal and visual, will be more appealing to adults than young children. But the exaggerated illustrations have the elemental appeal of the cheerful vulgarity of stand-up comedy and of sports and celebrity hype. The discovery quest is a sly commentary on all our exotic stereotypes. The European nobles are as brash as the Miami natives; in fact, the two groups look a lot alike, and both sometimes bear a distinct resemblance to those Wild Things we all know. Hazel Rochman
