On the surface, the story of the Red Cross Knight would seem ideal for a picture book, with its color and romance and the glorious set piece of the battle. But it seems a pity to have compressed the rich multiplicity of Spenser into so few pages that the beginning and the ending, leading up to and away from the dragon, read more like a synopsis than a story. Miss Hodges's collaboration with Trina Schart Hyman is visually lovely. . . . One of the most subtleand charming details is the border repetition of little ships under sail, a reference also used in the text as Spenser's metaphor for both his own storytelling and the knight's quest as a voyage.
