요즘 아이들은 산타할아버지의 존재를 믿지 않지만, 아직 순수한 동심을 지니고 있는 소년은 산타 할아버지를 만나기 위해 북극으로 향하는 기차에 올라탑니다. 소년이 산타 할아버지로부터 받기를 원하는 것은 바로 사슴이 끄는 썰매에 매달린 방울이지요.
온통 어둡고 깜깜한 밤이지만 기차 안은 아이들로 북적대고 산타 할아버지를 만나고 싶어하는 아이들의 마음을 담은 기차는 쉬지않고 북극을 향해 달려갑니다.
기차는 드디어 크리스마스 선물을 만드는 공장으로 가득 찬 북극에 도착하고 요정들에게 둘러 쌓인 산타 할아버지는 기차를 타고 온 아이들 중 한 명을 뽑아 첫번째 크리스마스 선물을 준다고 하지요.
그 '한 명'에 뽑힌 소년은 크리스마스 선물로 썰매의 방울을 받아 주머니에 넣지만, 돌아오는 길에 주머니에 구멍이 나서 방울이 없어진 사실을 알고는 몹시 낙담합니다.
하지만…..크리스마스 날 아침….크리스마스 트리 밑에서 조그만 상자 속에서 방울을 발견한 소년은 아름답고 신비한 방울 소리를 듣게 됩니다. 그러나 엄마 아빠는 그 신비하고 아름다운 방울 소리를 듣지 못하지요.
아마도 산타 할아버지 썰매의 방울 소리는 산타 할아버지의 존재를 믿고 크리스마스를 설레며 기다리는 동심을 지닌 어린이들에게만 들리나 봅니다.

Late one Christmas Eve after the town has gone to sleep, the boy boards the mysterious train that waits for him: The Polar Express bound for the North Pole. When he arrives, Santa offers the boy any gift he desires. The boy modestly asks for one bell from the harness of a reindeer. The gift is granted. On the way home the bell is lost. On christmas morning the boy finds the bell under the tree. The mother of the boy admires the bell, but laments that it is broken for you see, only believers can hear the sound of the bell.

Given a talented and aggressive imagination, even the challenge of as cliche-worn a subject as Santa Claus can be met effectively. Van Allsburg's Polar Express is an old-fashioned steam train that takes children to the North Pole on Christmas Eve to meet the red-suited gentleman and to see him off on his annual sleigh ride. This is a personal retelling of the adult storyteller's adventures as a youngster on that train. The telling is straight, thoughtfully clean-cut and all the more mysterious for its naive directness; the message is only a bit less direct: belief keeps us young at heart. The full-page images are theatrically lit. Colors are muted, edges of forms are fuzzy, scenes are set sparsely, leaving the details to the imagination. The light comes only from windows of buildings and the train or from a moon that's never depicted. Shadows create darkling spaces and model the naturalistic figures of children, wolves, trees, old-fashioned furniture and buildings. Santa Claus and his reindeer seem like so many of the icons bought by parents to decorate yards and rooftops: static, posed with stereotypic gestures. These are scenes from a memory of long ago, a dreamy reconstruction of a symbolic experience, a pleasant remembrance rebuilt to fufill a current wish: if only you believe, you too will hear the ringing of the silver bell that Santa gave him and taste rich hot chocolate in your ride through the wolf-infested forests of reality. About the Author
Author and illustrator Chris Van Allsburg has created numerous picture books for readers of all ages. He is the recipient of two Caldecott Medals, for Jumanji and The Polar Express, and has received many other awards, including the Regina Medal for Lifetime achievement in children's literature. While he now works full time on his books, he has also been a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. After completing his first book, Chris Van Allsburg said, "I have this theory that, drawing from my imagination, I am likely to leave a lot of small details out and create a drawing that ultimately has a touch of the surreal." Each of his books, in its own unique and intriguing way, has proved this theory to be true.
