From the Publisher
Descended from Spanish pirates, the Pigaroons, like their pilfering ancestors before them, stole stuff. One night they steal a crystal-clear block of ice from their neighbors the River Patrollers, who had intended to carve it for entry in the annual ice festival sculpture contest. When the River Patrollers awake to discover the Pigaroons have taken their block of ice, they decide that enough is enough, and they set about devising a plan . . . Arthur Geisert's etchings will delight readers with their beautiful colors and intricate details in this celebration of another triumph for creative ingenuity.
Publishers Weekly
Readers catch up with the latest adventures of favorite picture book characters. Thievery and doublecrosses are once again afoot in Pigaroons by Arthur Geisert. With the annual Ice Festival approaching, the titular group of porcine protagonists (similar to the stars of The Giant Ball of String and Nursery Crimes) steal the River Patrollers' block of ice, carving it into a fine portrait of Hernando de Soto. The victimized pigs use some ingenuity to melt their enemies' hopes of winning first prize.
Children's Literature
Evey year there is an Ice Festival along the river. For this, the River Patrollers on Porcine Ridge always cut a block of crystal-clear ice to carve their sculpture, which usually wins first prize. This annoys the Pigaroons from across the river who, true to their pirate ancestors, steal the block of ice this year, hoping to carve a winner. The River Patrollers carefully plan their revenge. After polishing a thin slab of ice, they sail it on their flying balloon to the festival, where the Pigaroons' statue of De Soto is proudly displayed. Focusing the sun through the ice, the River Patrollers melt De Soto away. They then burn a picture of him in the snow, winning first prize for their cleverness. Double-page scenes are filled with the details of the rival pig communities. The black etched lines create the delightful statues, contraptions, and elegant flying machine as well as scores of busy porkers. Delicately applied colors ad considerable appeal to the snowy landscapes. This is a charming, imaginative tale with strong visual appeal. The jacket illustration of the floating ship above the winter landscape is an appropriate introduction.
Kirkus Reviews
Only Geisert's agile mind could construct a fanciful pig plot with pirates, ice sculptures, and flying ships. The River Patrollers live in a stone quarry on Porcine Ridge overlooking the river. Each year they cut one big block of crystal-clear ice, carve a sculpture for the Ice Festival, and usually win first prize. Across the river live the Pigaroons, descendents of Spanish pirates, who true to their heritage, steal stuff. This year, they steal the Patrollers block of ice, and sculpt the famous Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto, intent on winning first place. The Patrollers devise a plan to thwart the Pigaroons using a round, polished disc of ice as lens and a flying machine (reminiscent of Shulevitz's flying machine), they focus light rays on the sculpture, melting de Soto, and winning first prize for their cleverness. Geisert's signature tinted etchings intricately detail the scenes, filling the pages with his clever touches. Like his previous pig tales, this is engaging, ingenious, and original-a "pigadilly."
