Annotation
Lots of Feelings takes a photographic look at the many different emotions people experience.
Children's Literature
What does your face look like when you are sad? When you are happy? When you are surprised? Does your friend's or brother's face look just the same as yours when they are feeling those same emotions? Rotner takes 24 pages to explore some of the different feelings all people have—and what those feelings look like when we are expressing them. Text is kept to a bare minimum to focus on the visual aspect of each of the specific feelings covered. Every page names one feeling which is then depicted in one large and two small photos of real children. Emotions covered are: happy, sad, grumpy, excited, shy, proud, angry, loving, surprised, frightened, thoughtful, sleepy, serious, silly, curious, and confused. The last page carries a note to parents or teachers. Here the author suggests ways to use this book to grow a child's awareness of their own feelings plus the feelings of others. Emphasis is put on helping children to appropriately express their emotions. Although this book looks extremely simple, reading others' emotions and knowing how to appropriately express our own feelings are important life skills to develop. Names of different emotions printed in bright type cover the fly pages.
School Library Journal
Many readers will find themselves represented in this multicultural array of close-up images of children displaying their emotions. From grumpy squints, excited grins, and surprised shouts, the photos move to whimsical curiosity, sadness (complete with tears), and sleepy yawns. Most pages clearly capture the precise quality they attempt to portray, particularly the twisted mouth of "confused" and the classic pout of "grumpy." Others are more subtle, such as "thoughtful" and "proud," or "frightened." This collection provides youngsters with the necessary labels to discuss their feelings. Whether shared with a group, parents, or a counselor-individually or in a class-this title provides the tools to facilitate discussion about children and their feelings.
