파리에서 가장 행복한 쥐 아나톨은 아내와 6명의 아이들과 함께 살고 있습니다. 해가 지면 쥐들은 인간들이 남긴 음식을 가져와서 가족들을 먹입니다. 하지만 어느날 아나톨은 인간들의 대화를 엿듣게 되고, 쥐들이 음식쓰레기를 뒤지기 때문에 인간들이 쥐를 싫어한다는 사실을 알게 됩니다. 크게 낙담한 아나톨은 자신의 장기를 발휘해서 스스로 돈을 벌기로 작정하고, 밤중에 뒤발 치즈공장을 찾아 갑니다. 공장 안의 치즈 감별실로 들어 가서는 그 곳에서 감별을 기다리고 있는 치즈들을 맛보면서 하나하나 감별결과와 자신의 이름인 "Anatole" 사인을 적은 메모지를 옷핀으로 꽂아 놓았습니다.
다음날 아침이 되자 뒤발 공장의 모든 사람들은 밤 사이에 아나톨이라는 사람이 감별실에 들어와서 각각의 치즈에 대한 정확한 감별을 하고, 개선점까지 자세히 적어 놓은 것을 발견하게 됩니다. 사장은 아나톨이라는 미지의 인물을 만나고 싶어했지만, 아나톨은 치즈를 감별하는 일을 비밀리에 하고 싶다는 메모를 전해줍니다. 아나톨의 감별과 제안으로 회사를 날로 발전하게 되고, 어느날 사장은 아나톨에게 부사장 자리를 제안하는 편지를 씁니다. 쥐의 역사상 처음으로 인간이 경영하는 큰 회사의 부사장 자리에 오르게 되는 아나톨은 기쁜 마음으로 제안을 수락하게 되고...

About the Author
Eve Titus was the author of numerous bestselling and beloved children's books, including the Anatole books and many chapter books about a mouse detective--Basil of Baker Street. Ms. Titus pased away in 2002.
Paul Galdone illustrated nearly three hundred books during his long career, many of which he also retold. His renditions of nursery tales such as The Little Red Hen, and Three Little Kittens have become classics. He illustrated nearly all of Ms. Titus' books, winning a Caldecott Honor award for both Anatole and Anatole and the Cat. Mr. Galdone passed away in 1986.
