우리나라에서도 요즘들어 점점 인기가 많아지고 있는 중국음식인 딤섬은 한 입에 먹을 수 있는 만두입니다. 딤섬의 한자어는 點心(점심)으로서 낮에 먹는 간단한 식사를 뜻합니다. 우리가 일상생활에 흔히 쓰는 점심이 순수 우리말이 아닌 한자어이고, 더군다나 중국말로는 딤섬이라니....
점심(點心)의 한자어를 글자 그대로 풀이하면 "마음에 점을 찍는다"는 의미이며, 다른 뜻으로는 점화에서 쓰이는 點과 같이 "마음의 불씨를 켜다"라는 의미가 되기도 합니다. 이 책의 저자는 딤섬(點心)의 의미를 "수많은 딤섬 접시 중에서 마음이 가는대로 손으로 점을 찍는다" 또는 딤섬을 담고 있는 접시가 조그맣기 때문에 그 모양을 일컫는 "작음 심장"의 뜻을 지니고 있다고 해석하네요.
이 책에서는 딤섬 레스토랑에 간 일가족 5명이 자신의 기호에 따라 각자 맛있는 딤섬들을 고르고, 서로 나눠먹으면서 모든 딤섬들을 골고루 맛봅니다. 온 가족이 함께 하는 즐거운 식사 시간을 간결한 문장과 원색의 화려한 그림으로 보여줍니다. 그리고 식사를 다 한 후, 빈 그릇의 무늬를 보고 어떤 딤섬들을 먹었는지를 마지막 페이지에 있는 딤섬 그림들 중에서 찾아보는 것도 재미잇습니다.
